Voice Chat + Voice Attack + Viacom Pro?

I tried to get voice chat up and running on a server I set up for my son and I to run a mission. I run Voice Attack and Viacom Pro. I also hosted the server on my machine. After many hours of reading forum posts and playing with settings we got to the point where he could hear me but I could not hear him. Anyone have any ideas what I may be doing wrong? I've heard that if you are running the server on your machine that could be problematic. Also, in the voice chat instructions, it looks like there may be some issues with running voice recognition features? I'm not entirely sure what the situation is there as the forum post was not written very well.
