wilbur81 Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 (edited) Gave Syria another go today at 4K with MSAA set to both None and 4x. The shimmering effect on buildings, shadows, and those massive chain-link fences is just really bad. Not sure if it's to be called a bug, WIP issue, or just bad execution? Probably best for me to actually film my screen with an ipad so you can see the effect rather than a track. Obviously a screenshot won't capture the pulsating movement. I'm getting worse shimmering in Syria at 4x MSAA than I do with PG at 0x MSAA. Anyone else experiencing this? **EDIT - I may be imagining things now, but i tried PG at 4x MSAA just for comparison and it seems as if, globally, since yesterday's update that AA in general has diminished. Anyone else noticing more 'jaggies' and shimmering generally in the sim since yesterday's update? Edited August 21, 2020 by wilbur81 i7 8700K @ Stock - Win11 64 - 64gb RAM - RTX 3080 12gb OC
MRW Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 On the Syria map I kind of know what you are talking about and I also get the filling like it is shimmering and there is quite a lot jagged edges, maybe thats because it seems to detailed really nicely. Done some tests, and MSAA x4 is definately working for me, but not sure if it's working as well as before the update? Can't tell really.
wilbur81 Posted August 23, 2020 Author Posted August 23, 2020 I'm noticing more shimmering as well on the new Syria map, using my standard MSAA 2x approach. MSAA 4x definitely helps a ton, with only a loss of 3 FPS max for me, low level flying over the highly populated Damascus buildings area. Yeah, it's interesting. If I'm honest, though the Syria map is far and away the most detailed map in DCS, it is probably the worst looking for me at the moment. I've been playing DCS at 4K for several years now and have never turned on MSAA in-game because, at that res., everything has looked pretty acceptable. But Syria? Man, it's bad. From altitude, metal building rooftops shimmer and dance like crazy... and those chain link fences... it's like staring at a moving MC Escher drawing. :) i7 8700K @ Stock - Win11 64 - 64gb RAM - RTX 3080 12gb OC
