Alex_rcpilot Posted March 30, 2008 Posted March 30, 2008 Hey guys, friend of mine is going to purchase a TrackIR for me in the U.S. He just asked if I'd like to get the headset active IR clip altogether. I checked Natural Point official site and found out they are just a few IR LED's, this makes me wonder whether I can DIY some sorta samilar stuff coz components like this are REAL handy. Does anyone here know about the IR signiture for TrackIR? Are the IR emitters(LED's) constantly on, or are they somehow modulated? If it's just as simple as a constant conduction, I won't have to buy that hard looking clip stuff. Thanks!
Flyby Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Hi Alex, I can't help you directly, but I've read online that there is a way to use an internet camera for head tracking. I've tried to search it out, but so far no joy. Maybe someone here can help? Flyby The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
Nordic Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Yes, you don't even need to buy the tracker. Freetrack allows you to use a simple webcam and some diodes for headtracking-very cheap (~40$). There are people who use the naturalpoint ir clip in combination with freetrack. I guess it should also be possible to use a diy clip with the naturalpoint track ir device. This is going to be my next project- great stuff. More infos: http://www.free-track.net/english/
Flyby Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 S~ Nordic! That's what I was talking about! Have at it Alex! :D As for me, I already have TIR-3 with Vector expansion, so I'm good to go. Flyby out The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
Alex_rcpilot Posted March 31, 2008 Author Posted March 31, 2008 Well thanks Nordic and Flyby. I had to use a proxy to bypass the blocking mechanism of our authority and access the website. The software is pretty cool indeed. As it's the second time I've heard about it, I decided to download and try it. I've already asked my friend to buy the TrackIR 4 pro for me, so I think this software and even its source code should only be fun for me to play with, yet when it comes to gaming purpose I'd like to use the TrackIR instead. No just because that I've already made the order, but also that the graphic processing software would add unnecessary workload to my CPU, and as you can see from my signiture it's nearly two years old.;) Thanks for sharing anyway. I won't by the stock Track IR headset clip coz I was just reminded of the characteristics of the image sensor commonly used today, possibly in TrackIR too. Video cameras have image lag, which makes them dull to modulated light. I think this would eliminate the reason for the Natural Point hardware engineers to introduce a modulated IR lumination. Actually I got suspicious with the modulation idea just because of similar techniques used in other optical devices for better ambient light interference immunity, which now seems unnecessary or even impractical.
Flyby Posted March 31, 2008 Posted March 31, 2008 Alex!!!!!!!!!!! You're not asleep yet??!! Flyby:) The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
Flyby Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Sleep. Sleep. your eyes are getting heavy... meanwhile I hope to see you in the virtual skies one day! ;) Flyby out The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
Alex_rcpilot Posted April 1, 2008 Author Posted April 1, 2008 Oh that was a couple of day ago. I slept pretty well that night though. I'm running Flaming Cliffs on my computer, with the 1.12b patch. And I've also got TeamSpeak. Frankly I'm not quite good at tactics, if you'd like to do some fly around or missile combat/dogfight with me I'm sure it's ganna be a good chance for me to advance my skills. How do we contact each other when we wanna fly?
Flyby Posted April 1, 2008 Posted April 1, 2008 Hi Alex, I'm sort of a poser at the moment. I'm using the wife's pc to keep track of my simulation interests. My old system fried and I'm looking to build a new one. Sad to say but the real world keeps intruding on my time table. You know how it is when unexpected expenses occur. even my squadron mates wonder if I'll return before too long :( As for online flying, when I get back to it, I'm a Hyperlobby and Teamspeak fan. I too have Flaming Cliffs, and really look forward to Black Shark. My squadron flies IL2 and I made coop missions for them before my system failed me. But where there's a will there's a way. Don't be too sure that you'll learn anything from me. I'm not what you'd call a competent pilot. But I sure love a desperate situation! :D Flyby out The U.S. Congress is the best governing body that BIG money can buy.
Alex_rcpilot Posted April 1, 2008 Author Posted April 1, 2008 oops sorry to hear that. First glance at your words I thought it was just the software system that had crashed, but now it sounds like something went wrong with the hardware. At least you've got your wife's pc to play with. Should the same thing happen to me I'd be totally toasted - I ain't married, not even in a relationship. lol! I started with Jane's USAF like nine years ago when I was in junior high, had to play with it on my cousin's computer, sometimes in an internet caff coz I hadn't got my own pc till I was 21. Had a little fun with Flanker 2.5 in college, and long before I could have learned about the real stuff in flight, I bought the LOMAC CD, soon after that my LOFC arrived. So I don't have a long history with modern combat sims, hence you'd never need to worry about a desperate situation. Hope you'll be back in sky before long. BTW, there's possibility that the TrackIR that I'm going to purchase will arrive at the hotel before my friend checks in. Presumably it's not ganna work out even though my friend has already made the hotel reservation, right? It's Holiday Inn, CHICAGO OAKBROOK. He's staying apirl 9th through 14th, and checking out in the morning of 15th. And Natural Point is located in Oregon. Any suggestions when I should place the order? I've asked the same question by filling out the NP official qestion form, so far there's no reply.
