Relation between Pimax FOV, Refresh Rate and resolution steam vR is showing

I have a question I really can't wrap my head around.

I own a Pimax 5k plus. Which runs a resolution per eye of 2560x1440 pixels.

I just purchased a RTX 3090 and what I tired to do was to simulate a Pimax 8kx on my system, to see if I could run it.

The Pimax 8kx has a resolution of 3840x2160 per eye which is 8.2 K pixels and runs at 75 Hz. So I set my Pimax 5K plus to 72 Hz which is as close as possible to the Pimax 8K.

If I set the FOV to large I tried to put the fist value as close as possible to that ( as good as the tiny slider allowed me to) which was 3860*2380. So the second value is higher than the native resolution and a total of 9.1 K pixels which comes close to my target resolution.

Then I switched to normal FOV. First value again as close as possible which gave me 3868x3180. The second value for the vertical resolution is now double the value of the native Pimax 8KX horizontal resolution. Which results in a total of 12.2 K Pixels and a lot of stutters in DCS.

Now it gets even weirder.

I changed the FOV back to large and the changed the refresh rate to 90 Hz.

I was expecting that the resolution should behave as it does at 72 Hz.

But this time if the horziontal resolution is close to the Pimax 8KX the vertical value is lower than in the test with 72 Hz. What came out was 3852x1824. Thats a total of 7.0 K. If I increase the vertical value now to match the target resolution I end up with 4584x2168 which is 9.9 K resolution.

Can someone explain, what are the relationship between FOV, resolution and refresh rate for Pimax and SteamVR users?
