Using the autopilot correctly?

I was having trouble with the autopilot yesterday (altitude hold) but now reading the manual it looks like I might have skipped a step. So let me ask here again and see if I'm getting it right or I'm missing something in the procedures. 

 

So for altitude Hold: 

 

1. Engage Autopilot ON

2. Alt switch ON

3. Wait for A/P Ref light to illuminate, then Press NWS button. 

 

What Im unsure of is whether i need to hold NWS or is a simple button press enough?

Beware that slight stick movement can override and disconnect the AP. Adding a small null zone fixes this problem if it becomes persistent.
