Hey all,

I  have attached one track file

Grade for the pilot of the tanker  A+

Grade for the boom operator       F-

I know my close formation flying technique still needs work.  But this boom operator guy / gal needs some at least as much RE-training.  Take a look at the track.  The dang refueling probe is injected into the cockpit as least as far as the ejector seat.

Wrong Hole!  Wrong Hole!

Looks like some kind of Nurse Ratchet Covid vaccination.  Something has gone wrong.   Then bang, it connects...

I know there is some kind of timing / AI / thingy / protocol for the AI to work properly.   I have tested yelling "Xxx Wipe" and it does not work!

Please, can some one be kind enough to clue me in as to how to properly manipulate the boom operator AI?

I'll try,

I remember being at your phase. Nice job so far, keep up the good work. You'll figure it out soon enough. Please take the tongue-and-cheek in the manner that I mean it (dishing it back as you served it).

What "close formation flying"??????

He's not superman. He can't drive the boom in a direction it can't physically go.

100% YOUR FAULT. You drove over the refueling probe. It's a mistake we make during the learning process. STOP TRYING TO FLY THE PROBE AND THE HOG AT THE SAME TIME. FLYING THE PROBE IS HIS JOB. FLYING THE HOG IS YOUR JOB. LEARN THE DIFFERENCE. STOP DOING HIS JOB.

The probe doesn't have a collision model, for obvious reasons related to the AI and collision problems. If you're in the proper location it's really a non-issue. Sure it could be improved, but that would mean you just fail here faster. You need to be a stable platform and wait for the operator to connect. You are not stable, you are chasing the probe. That's why it's clipping through the cockpit. You drive up into it until it reaches the limits of it's operating envelope, then you keep driving up into it until the model has nowhere to go and clips into your cockpit. I swear I watched this same track and made this same reply 6 months ago. I'll probably watch this same track, and make this same reply in another 6 months. We all did it. Stop doing it!

The fact you collide with the tail of the tanker proves your formation flying was a failure. That should never happen, and clipping the boom should be extremely rare and a non-issue. The AI is "broken" because you work to break it. Stop doing that.

Yes. Stop trying to break the AI. Stop crashing into the back of the tanker. Your job is to put the hole in a steady spot for the dude to drive the pipe into. That's all you do. Stay in position and wait. Once you connect stay into position. Going up is just as much an error as is going down too much. Learn the probe indications, and the proper position. Stop trying to connect to the probe, that's not your job.

Hope this gives you some guidance. Stop crashing into other airplanes (especially when they're friendly!)

LOL

Thanks!

I am starting to understand the AI a bit  more.  The point of view you get is a bit confusing.  All the twitching, stabbing, and raising and lowering is disorientating for me.   It is like waiving a hotdog in a dogs face and saying "STAY!".  Good Luck...

I am not really chasing the boom as much as I having stability problems being that close to the tanker where the movement differentials are magnified.   Plus, when I am close to connection or I do connect, then the boom seems to get in the way and the reference points on the tanker that I have been using vanish.

BTW...   After to a few foiled attempts my first urge?   Ramming Speed !!!
