MonkeyIsland Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Hello all, I'll be investing in a copy of LoMac soon, and will have to get a joystick. There is very little to choose from, and I'm not that hard core that I need a HOTAS. Basically there are two models suitable to Flight Simming and readily available where I live, the Saitek Cyborg Evo and the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. I hate the feel of the Saitek. It has a strange socket that houses a plate which in turn presses up on a spring, and this is what centers the joystick. It's hard to overcome the initial movement of the stick, and then it moves easily, but the plate continues to scrape along the housing. It feels awful compared to the Logitech. The Logitech, feels good and has a consistent and smooth feel to it's movement. Problem with this stick is, many of the reports I have read say it only lasts 2 months, at which point it starts to drift, and no amount of recalibrating will help. From what I've read, it is apparently a servo problem or something, and some WD40 lubricant to the servo's may or may not fix the problem. My question is, is anyone out there using the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro, and how long have you had it? How is it performing? Any advice would be appreciated. Also, will the following machine run LoMac OK? Intel P4 3.0Ghz 1024KB Cache 800Mhz FSB, 1GB DDR @ 400Mhz, and a ATI Radeon 9800 Pro 128 at 1280x1024 or possibly 1600x1200? I read here that this is a demanding game. Thanks.
S77th-GOYA Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 Your rig will be fine for medium to medium high settings. About the stick, I agree with the lack of feel of the Saitek. And I've also heard those bad stories about the Logitech sticks. Why can't you get a different stick? Online ordering is not an option I guess?
MonkeyIsland Posted January 4, 2005 Author Posted January 4, 2005 Ya, I live in Canada and Amazon.ca doesn't offer electronics yet. I can get my hands on a Logitech Freedom stick, I'll give that a bash, see if I like the feel. From what I've read, it doesn't seem to have the problems of the 3D. Medium to med high settings only? I wonder what rigs the Dev's are using to capture the videos?
Dark_Sceptre Posted January 4, 2005 Posted January 4, 2005 If you live in Canada I am totally convinced that there are a BUNCH of online computer stores you could shop in, if you have a credit card (I don't know your age, but that could be a problem I guess..?). And if all else fails, you could contact Saitek USA and ask them for help - they did offer to ship me an X45 back when it was too new to be available in Norwegian stores, and I'm sure they'd be able to help you out too EDIT: As for the second part of your post; A 3GHz P4 with 1GB mem should run the game just fine. I have a 9800XT myself, and I get decent if not good framerates at 1024x768 with medium-high settings, and I suggest you consider staying there as well. This game looks much better with some AA&AF (even 2x is a big improvement) - better than high res no AA in fact, even on my 21" CRT. The game seems to be mostly CPU bound at those settings, meaning that your framerates drop due to CPU workload and not GPU overload, with some notable exceptions. 1GB of mem is just great and there's certainly no point in getting more, as the game's heap size never goes above 512MB anyway (well that I've seen anyway)
