Arink429 Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 (edited) Hi. After the last aircraft is launched, the deck crew prepare the deck for landing. I've seen on several videos that they cover the shuttle with a metal shield and they attach to the track several pieces with a speeder. What are those pieces placed for? Antonio. Micr0 Posted March 18, 2021 Posted March 18, 2021 I was told that they are shims to prevent the cat track from becoming warped or changing shape, but that was 3rd hand info. 1
Pieterras Posted March 22, 2021 Posted March 22, 2021 The Waist Catapults are unique as they have to be set up in order to properly recover aircraft. On Catapult #3, the JBD Safety, Weight Board Operator and Holdback Operators are also in charge of "wrapping the waist", which consists of bolting metal "buttons" into the track to ensure the arresting gear wire does not fall into the track during recover. This video is a compilation of the Weight Board Operator wrapping their buttons and the Holdback Operator wrapping their buttons.
