One of my external Hard drives (western digitial My Book 500 gigs) recently failed on me. Every time I plug it in, i get some clicking noises and it shuts off (also known as the click of death). This external HD holds a lot of aviation data that I had collected over the years. If I take it to a professional recovery center, it would cost over $1000 just to recover the data. So....I was wondering do you guys know any methods of recovering the data.

Basically, I don't care about the external HD itself, I know its lost, I can always get a new one I just need the data off that drive.

Here's what I've tried so far:

I know its not the power source or cable malfunctioning because I took it apart and connected it to my PC desktop which could also read SATA drives, but it did the same thing: 6 clicks and shuts off.

I haven't tried putting the HD in a zipper bag and shoving it in the freezer to shrink and correct the pins inside the HD. But I'm aware of that method as well.

The freezer way works most of the time, heres some steps to recover the data, you should be able to get about ~30 minutes of recovering time:

1) Take the HDD out of the external casing,

2) Wrap tightly with an anti-static bag

3) Make sure everything is perfectly sealed, may also use a cloth around the outside to remove any condensation

4) Place in the freezer overnight then plug it back into the computer, making sure there is no condensation on the power plugs etc.

You should be able to do this 2 or 3 times depending on the HDD,

there are also some tutorials on google if you search with a more detailed explanation
