In US military aircraft, you set your nav lights to flash if you lose your radios and are in a "NORDO" (no-radio) situation. This lets people on the ground, tower for example, know that you can't communicate and to clear any traffic that may be in your way, and they will send you a set of light signals that lets you know your either clear to land or tell you to go around. They also know you are NORDO when you set a 7600 squawk code in your transponder, but in certain tactical situations, you don't have that mode of your transponder operating, so the flashing nav lights are the only way to let them know.

Many thanks for the reply:thumbup: NavalAV8TR, I shall amend my flying procedure forthwith,NB: up till now I have used the flashing lights to determin the lead aircraft when in a flight on rejoin, or take off, as to the spool up I will carry on with nav lights on before spool up and taxi lights on when starting to taxi....................Unless someone knows different????:D
