It just cost way too much for what was supposed to be the "cheap" option. The cost per unit was up to $14.5 million. I don't know any yanks who are having a hard time with this one. The community most affected (the OH-58D community) has been screaming for months that the ARH was the wrong way to go and that the best option at this time would be to develop an OH-58E that cuts down on weight by using newer electronics and upgrading the powerplant with something more current. I somehow doubt that the Defense Department will go for that, though, and will probably go back to the drawing board and design something completely new. Nobody in aviation that I know shed any tears over the cancellation of the Comanche, either, so they do have that in common.
