192nd_Erdem Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 (edited) TBH I've heard that Ka-50 has been quite successful in Chechenya. It's powerful coaxial motor and heavy armor made it perfect for such a low-level conflict in a high mountain area. I don't really know why Erdogan was dropped, but probably Army didn't want to go on a unproven "last minute" redesign helicopter. There's still a prejudice against Russian stuff after 90's probably :) I'm quite happy with their decision though, today you need a light, fast & powerful equipped helicopter rather than a flying tank, and it's competely ours to customise. Also A-129 is a better design to improvise on. Maybe we'll able to make the next generation helicopter completely by ourselves. Edited October 29, 2008 by 192nd_Erdem
-sulan- Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 I also got the impression (from what I could find online) that the Ka-50 was quite successful in Chechnya. One thing I read that I found interesting was that the coaxial rotor system performed well in mountainous terrain and mischevious winds, up-down drafts. And that it did'nt require more maintenance than the mi-8's and 24's, one of those two Ka-50's were downed for awhile due to damage though IIRC.. That's what I reaad out of it, but then I'm biased since I want the Ka-50 to be awesome now that I'll be flying it soon :P
jpm1 Posted November 1, 2008 Posted November 1, 2008 it interests maybe Lybia i was just watching a report on Euronews Lybia's interested in purchasing russian equipement (2 billions $ : S-300 , Tor , Mig-29 , SU-30) what was the bad experience with the russian helicopter, I ask because my country uses a mix of brands like uh-1h uh-1c, jet ranger, mi-17, uh-60, uh-60 arpia, ka-32 (not sure if we still have it in service we had two, and they ere called t-82s) we had have accidents, but I never saw that the russian build were more prom to accidents. At the beginning we got rented mi-8, the media started a controversy after two accidents on this type of helicopter, later it was clarified that it was because pilots were not used to such a big helicopter (first accident) for the second one, I don't know what was the reason but I was able to see the fuselage being carried in a truck. Sorry for falling from high but what's your country ? SU-25 missions [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
