Honest989 Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 For the purposes of this, we'll use the bog standard Helmet mounted sight procedure (because I'm still practicing with this rather than vector to target etc). You might also find it useful to download the user mission 'road block' - I'm still using this to practice my duck shoot. 1)Obviously, fly to and locate your targets 2)Press Alt-W for master arm 'On' 3)Press 'H' for the sight 4)For Vikhr missiles, press Y 5)Press 'O' for the TV and slew the target box to position. Once you find a target, press the target lock key, Typically 'enter' on keyboards 6)Manoeuver into firing range, and make sure you have the two green circles in the hud aligned. 7)Once you get into range, the yellow circle will eventually become a crosshair, at which point you HOLD the fire button for a second. 8)Press 'F6' to watch 45kg of laser guided missile slam into the target. Ok, this works for me most of the time. As I haven't mastered Abris just yet I'm not using anything more sophisticated. The problem is there are a couple of times where: 1)I never seem to be able to fire, despite having a Shvkal lock - I keep closing the distance until I'm on top and nothing happens to allow me to fire. 2) Green boxes appear on the hud reticle which makes it tough for me to slew the Shvkal 3) I crash and burn a lot. Also, a quick question to Track IR people, does HMT work a lot faster if you have this little gadget?
nemises Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 yes, HMT works wonders with TrackIR. the above procedure is missing one imprtant thing: - turn on your Laser! without the laser, you will get no range information, no lock (indicated by a TA in the hud and Shkval), no Launch authorise (Indicated by a "C" in the HUD and Shkval), and of course, without the laser firing, the Vihkr would have no beam to ride down even if you did manage to launch override it. What you should see , assuming you are within 8 KM's of the target, and have it locked by the shkval, and with Vihkrs selected, and laser armed is: TA (Tracking) and 5.9 (this is the range..can be any value depending on the range the laser returns) And then, once you align the two circles (one for target, one for Vihker FOV) you will see C (Launch Authorised) aswell. My advise to you is DO NOT keep flying towards your target. Achieve a stable hover (with auto hover mode) 5 or 6 KM's from target, then go through all of the above procedure + turn on the laser (the switch next to the "reset" button on the weapons control panel at the left hand side)
Dr_Watson Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Above sounds perfect. You can hover up to maybe 8km away, you don't get a launch symbol as you are out of range, but you can flick the the fire mode to manual then you can launch from as far away as you like. I got a good strike against a tank from 8km away. It's quite handy if you really need to take out a SAM from a distance.
