Chubster Posted April 24, 2022 Posted April 24, 2022 Hi all......Ive been learning AG in the Viper so not a "complete newbie" but I've just started learning BVR. I'm having issues locking targets up. I can see them via datalink etc but even those my bars are well within the specified height of the reported bandit i never seem to "see" them myself so that i can acquire a lock. What is the effective range for a lock? They seem to have no issue locking me ?
Frederf Posted April 24, 2022 Posted April 24, 2022 Those targets look about 55nm away. Depending on what they are they just plain aren't detectable by the radar under those conditions. You should see most targets for sure at 30-40nm.
Chubster Posted April 24, 2022 Author Posted April 24, 2022 Those ones were but I've been down to thirty and twenty miles and stilll having trouble.....then boom I'm dead, so they aren't having issues
Frederf Posted April 25, 2022 Posted April 25, 2022 It's important to make sure the radar antenna brackets the altitude of the target and you have the smallest practical scan pattern (A's and B's). RWS should perform better than TWS for initial detection. There is also two regimes of radial velocity the radar doesn't perform well at: zero radial and radial equal to the ground oncoming. There are filters associated with these Doppler frequencies.
