brettt777 Posted May 28, 2022 Posted May 28, 2022 Okay, with all this discussion about the FLIR system in the Harrier, I thought I would throw this out there. When you bring up the menu to select the TPOD, there is also another selection for FLIR. What is the difference between FLIR and TPOD? Can this other FLIR be used for targeting? Where is the sensor? Here are some screen shots. The first one is the menu with TPOD on the right side and FLIR on the left. The second one is the TPOD page, the third is the FLIR page. I'm just wondering what this other FLIR is for. The fourth screen shot is for my second question. Whenever I go into A/G mode, I get these four short slashes in the middle of my HUD. What do they mean? AMD Ryzen 9 5900X @ 4.4ghz, 64gb DDR4 @ 3200mhz, GeForce RTX-3060ti 8GB DDR6, Three KTC 32" QHD monitors @ 165hz, Rosewill 80plus Bronze 1000w, Corsair Hydro H100i, 2tb M.2 SSD for OS, Two 3tb HDD, 2tb SSD for DCS, P3D, Star Citizen, Sound Blaster Zx, Thermaltake Overseer RX-I, Winwing Orion 2 HOTAS F-15EX throttle and F-16EX stick, Winwing 3 MFD MIP with FA-18 UFC and F-16 ICP, TrackIR 5, Surround Speakers & Subwoofer, Oculus Quest 2 VR. :joystick::pilotfly:
Spurts Posted May 29, 2022 Posted May 29, 2022 FLIR is a NAVFLIR on the nose of the jet, you can actually see it as the bulb in front of the HUD. It can be used at night to project imagery onto the HUD as well. It has it's own hot spot detector algorithms that also project little v's on the HUD to show you where heat sources are. It is integral to the NA Harrier and not related to the TPOD at all. The dashed lines AFAIK mean you cannot release a weapon. You either have no valid target, still have master arm off, weight on wheels, no remaining munitions, etc. 1

I have seen the little "v"s on the HUD and also wondered what they were. So I'm guessing that NAVFLIR cannot be used for targeting of any kind. Spurts Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 Correct, the ARBS in the nose can be, but it is basically just visual pickup and designation. Only the Litening G4 pod gives the ability to to standoff/slewing IR search and designation of targets. Actually I think the NAVFLIR can be used for Laser Spot Search if you have a JTAC or buddy lasing. 1
