percivaldanvers Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 This instant action mission is giving me some trouble. Is there a good strategy for winning it?
Dragon1-1 Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 Yeah, let the AI die first. They're gung-ho, you can afford to be conservative, get as many hits in as you can, but concentrate on surviving, if things start looking hairy, extend. If the friendly AIs won't finish the job themselves, you can mop up what remains. Mind you, I haven't tried it with the latest BVR AI improvements. It is possible that it favors the enemy now. 1

Those Migs and Flankers do seem to have their <profanity> very much together today. They just gobbled up the AI Hornets, even when I cheesed it by equipping them with AIM 120Cs and AIM 9Xs.
Dragon1-1 Posted May 30, 2022 Posted May 30, 2022 Even if you ordered the AI to engage at will? Otherwise they're a bit passive. The recent BVR improvements were applied to everyone. Although, IIRC the AI levels in that mission are randomized, so if you ended up with a bunch of rookies against eight aces, this is the expected result.

Hmmm I suppose it's a possibility I may have forgotten to tell them to engage. I'll run it again and see! Edit: Yeah the hornets are getting slaughtered Edited May 30, 2022 by percivaldanvers
zacsac Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 I simply can’t beat this mission. In fact the friendly AI is usually crushed after the first volley. Not sure what’s going on but it seems like the blue missiles are trashed rather easily where most of the red missiles are hits. It’s like if you get pass the initial BVR exchange the red missiles are faster or something. Or maybe I suck? Either way this mission has always stomped me. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Dragon1-1 Posted May 31, 2022 Posted May 31, 2022 (edited) If they've got R-27ERs, these bastards are fast. In fact, can go faster than an AMRAAM in some circumstances, which is probably the problem here. This is a lightweight missile with a big motor, and it doesn't loft, so all that motor goes into speed. With the new BVR AI, they might be able to kill AMRAAM-equipped Hornets due to this discrepancy. Basically, if both fire at the same time or nearly so, the R-27ER might hit the Hornet before the AMRAAM goes active, due to the latter lofting, which will increase range, but increase overall time of flight. An AMRAAM does outrange the R-27ER, so the Hornets should probably engage from further out to capitalize on this, but the AI is probably not smart enough yet to realize that. Remember that BVR AI is still WIP. It seems to be doing well in symmetrical engagement, but asymmetrical is a whole other story. Plus, it doesn't really cooperate, group behavior is WIP. Myself, I decided to just stick to air to ground until the next update, which will supposedly bring new BFM AI, as well. Edited May 31, 2022 by Dragon1-1

Possibly it's because you can't make it use AIM 7s so you're forced to use much better missiles. Even so they still do much better than even AMRAAM equipped hornets. 3 hours ago, Dragon1-1 said: If they've got R-27ERs, these bastards are fast. I do notice a lot of hornets bursting into flames before they even go defensive, so it seems possible that they're getting hit while they're trying to support their AMRAAM launches. I can't say whether there's anything wrong with the BVR AI, since I'm so bad at BVR that I wouldn't have the frame of reference .
