Petrovitch not shutting off sight

After destroying a target and before turning off to re-set, I press "Down Short" to tell him to close the doors and turn off "Observe". He closes the doors but doesn't turn off "Observe" causing the gyros to tumble or be damaged. Now he won't bring up a list of targets. 

Is "Down Short" the correct command? Is there something else?

Down short is correct but it will only command the AI if the AI Petrovich menu is up. If the menu isn’t up it won’t do anything. This can be used to make it do two bindings, one when AI menu isn’t up and one when it is.
 

For example I have my AI hat also bound to control my searchlight, since I don’t need to use Petrovich usually when I need to control a search light. 
 

So if you were pressing down short without the AI menu up, that was probably your issue.

Thanks for responding @AeriaGloria but I did have the Petrovitch menu up. I also tried switching the menu off after giving the down short command but no luck. I've confirmed that the "Observe" switch is up and the "Doors" switch is down after giving the down short command by switching to the front cockpit after giving him sufficient time to flip the switches.

If sight doors are closed that means observe should be off. Only Observe off closing doors, there is no other switch for that. I think people mix protective glass doors with actual sight doors...

I'm not sure yet, but I think it's happening to me too on MP.

I ordered Petrovich with Down-Short command, I saw the sight moving as if he was resetting the sight and going Observe Off but after turning around  I notice that the sight was still trying to be somewhere else and with the Red Caution Light Sight Limit on, so I had to tell Petro to shut off again with Down-short.

Now I usually keep pressing Down-short a couple times after using the sight with Petro just to be sure for not get the gyros jammed.

I'll try to check in SP, when able, if can see the what is going on with the Observe switch and Petro.

I'm not sure why but if I select "Next Missile" (Rt short) then select Down-Short it works properly. I get the message "No target selected" and both the Doors and the Observe switches are in the down position. He will now work the next time I ask him to search for target.

right short is not "next missile" its "next missile TYPE" for when you have different types equipped
