alboon2000 Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 (edited) Hi, i've tried this mission at least 25 times but I can't succeed. I think the main problem is that I get shot down sooner or later by manpad or SA (9 I think, not sure). Anyway, my wingmen and I never succeed in killing EVERY target, as it seems to be the only way to pass this mission. Any advice ? Can I "cheat" and modify the mission to unhide the SA9 out of the forest ? This is a big flaw indeed, because we have no chance killing it when it's hidden by the forest... Is this the one where a four ship flies over a huge mountain range to attack lots of targets, and the first opponents are two Hinds? Made it "once". Destroyed all targets, but we flew to fast and ran out of gas. It's WAY more difficult now. Not so many trees in the valley back in the days. There are ways to remove them, but I don't know how. And it should be done by the devs of you ask me. Cheers!
alboon2000 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 Yes it's this one. I already set "forest density" to the minimum (I believe it's 30%) but the SA9remains hidden... 1

When played it back in 16/17, there were no trees, just an open field. So one could order recon and attack accordingly. Even all my wingmen survived, but alas, we all ran out of fuel.
alboon2000 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 (edited) The fuel isn't a problem anymore. But when I ask a wingman to destroy air defences, or ground targets, or target of opportunity, he never kills the 2 annoying targets and eventually gets shot down. So my question is : is there a way to finish this mission, even by "cheating" (modifying the mission file, getting rid of the trees, ...), but without skipping it in the campaign ? MAXsenna Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 It should be possible because the missions are not encrypted. Go ask in the Mission Editor forum for how to remove trees. Then open the mission in the Mission Editor and do it. I've been lazy, I had a thought about posting this as a bug in the bugs section here. If you do have the disk space, you could download the 1.5 version of DCS or similar to see what it should be like. The included Huey campaign (and a lot of others), had a similar issue where there suddenly were trees where you're supposed to land.
alboon2000 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 I tried to move to SA9 (I believe you can't move the trees, it's not part of a mission design) but I can't save the modifications... I suppose the file is protected.
MAXsenna Posted August 27, 2022 Posted August 27, 2022 Oh, that's why I wrote ask in the forum. There is a way. Add some trigger to remove the trees. If I knew, I would have done it for you. Well, I'm lazy, I told you. But the first Google hit.
alboon2000 Posted August 27, 2022 Author Posted August 27, 2022 Oh... Thank you ! I didn't have a clue about this possibility. I'll have a look in a few days and report. I think I won't be able to save the modifications but I'm going to read your link, I may have an answer. Thanks again! 1
MAXsenna Posted August 28, 2022 Posted August 28, 2022 You can edit and save fine any mission or campaign that's included with a module. They are not encrypted as the paid campaigns. But they will be overwritten in the next update. So make a copy.
alboon2000 Posted October 1, 2022 Author Posted October 1, 2022 OK so I confirm it's impossible to modify built in missions files, BUT I downloaded a file from the DCS user files site : I can now modify the mission, eventhough it's not the most up to date version. Anyway : I did like you told me to, but I don't know which level of destruction I must chose ?

I have edited included mission files before, they are not encrypted, so that should be possible, but they are overwritten whenever you update DCS. I might try myself tomorrow.
alboon2000 Posted October 4, 2022 Author Posted October 4, 2022 So to be clear : the files located within Program Files are protected by Windows so I had to check "run as admin" in DCS.exe. So nothing to do with DCS finally
CyberCopter Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 Well this thread explains a lot. I spent all morning flying over that mountain repeatedly in a doomed effort to find all the targets. Thankfully I eventually considered the possibility that others walked off the same plank. I'll fix the mission somehow. Thanks for the helpful suggestions.
CyberCopter Posted June 2, 2024 Posted June 2, 2024 (edited) I had to open mission 8 in Mission Editor and move things a little more into the open. As written, you start shooting at the target 155 SPGs and a couple of them drive into the woods where you and your wingmen will never hit them, thus spoiling the chance for completion. I recommend dragging them into the clearing by the Mi-8. I also recommend moving the insurgents out a little in the direction of the Mi-8. When I flew the mission I hovered long enough to knock out the 155 SPGs myself with the Vikhr missiles and unleashed the rest of the flight to attack ground targets of opportunity. The cleaned up the rest in a couple of minutes. I only got a score of 80 but at least I never have to fly over that blasted pass again. I really dislike missions where you fly a long way to the target zone, especially when the targets are lost in a the woods. I feel that I wasted a lot of time on mission 8, and the only things I learned for my effort were the importance of letting my wingmen have a share of the work (and to Google search for problem missions a lot sooner!). Edited June 2, 2024 by CyberCopter I needed to blather more.
