Hi, I made a mission for practicing refueling in various airframes, with some additional stuff like bombers and escorts for eye candy and fun.

I have a few problems that have stumped me, could someone who knows this stuff better than me take a quick look and tell me why the following is happening and how to fix it please?

1) F15 excort to the Viper racetrack tanker flies off straight away instead of flying alongside the tanker as I planned

2) Viper racetrack tanker Shell 1-1 does not respond to radio when contacted

3) Viper racetrack tanker shell 1-1 veers off to the right after approx a minute or so, despite me setting a straight line. How does the AI fly a racetrack pattern and how do you set that up, IE size of the legs etc.

4) Finally, how do I make the wingmen fly in a closer formation in the editor?

Thanks

I don't have time to open your mission but I'll try my best to help:

1. You need to give them a 'follow' command as an ADVANCED WAYPOINT ACTION and ensure that you're picking the right target for them to follow. The labelling of what the 3 follow distances mean is truly appalling but I posted about that recently and someone explained them - look for that post (first one is forward/back, second is up/down and third is left (-) and right (+))

2. Ensure you have it tasked to be a refueller (Tanker -a) which is given to you when you chose  the task Refuelling from the inspector panel on the right side of the screen. And that you have a unique radio station and tacan for it. Also if it's a boom tanker and you need a drogue then it won't talk to you and vice versa.

3. To set up a racetrack or an orbit (orbits are nicer tbh) then you need two waypoints  - the first is where you tell it to start the racetrack via ADVANCED WAYPOINT ACTIONS and the waypoint AFTER that is where it will turn around at.

4. You have to give them a formation command and then specify the type. Again - ADVANCED WAYPOINT ACTIONS / Set Option / Formation.

This should address all your issues.

Thanks, thats really helpful, however, I have had limited success following he advice....! The tanker still wont talk to me, depsite making sure it was the right type - originally I had it as a KC135 MPRS, as I had set a Viper and a Tomcat as client jets to use it, so it should have been able to refuel both types of jet, correct? I changed it to a boom only, as it was in the viper as I was having issues, and it still wont talk to me, so not sure.....Texaco -1 also wont respond, everything is set the same as teh tanke rthat does respond as far as I can see...

Also despite carefully checking, the F-15 still does not follow, I have set it to follow Shell, the tanker, it only has one waypoint, where I placed it and I set an action to follow shell, at that point. But it still breaks hard left and flies off when I start the mission in the Viper racetrack jet.

I have though sorted the tanker pattern! And my wingmans formation. I have attached the editted version, if you or soemone else could take alook, it would be great, thanks again

Usually if you are unable to contact any tanker it is due to the radio frequency selection. The tanker is usually set to 251MHz so make sure your F16s have that frequency set. The follow command for the F15 works for me in the attached mission, it follows the tankers racetrack. I have also added a player F16 and during testing I could contact the tanker. I hope this example helps. Cheers.folllowtanker.miz

It’s breaking off to go to it’s 1st waypoint t. You want the advanced waypoint action on waypoint 0 I.e.where it spawns. You can delete we 1 too.

As for the tanker not taking, try turning easy comma on at first if you’re not sure about radio settings.

Thanks, both, yes, I have carefully checked the frequencies and they are correct - this is why I was perplexed and posted about it ( I try and work this stuff out first before I post!) ,  did you look in my mission to check or wa sthat just a suggestion? Maybe I missed something will check again.....

Thanks both for taking the time to help with this....

Edit: So I downloaded your mission and checked it, I had the escort set to "escort" rather than follow...seems to be working now.

However, the radio frequencies were definitely all good...when I changed the refueling jet back to an F14, it worked...go figure! It was an MPRS tanker so should have been able to do both....
