Overview of what’s required to add lights to existing model?

I’ve never done any 3d modelling, I don’t own 3ds max or anything.

I have a free to use model that some else wrote the Lua stuff for and I can import it into dcs and use it as an ai aircraft - all that works.

but the model has no lights, so at night it’s just a black hole. 
 

what is required and roughly how do I go about adding lights to it?

If you're adding lights to a mod with free 3d software, I assume you're using blender. Tobsen has shut down his github page for it, but the project was picked up by "vapor labs". Their page is here

There is hort explanation for how to add lights there, but an even quicker explanation is there is an export mode called "light" that can be applied to an empty.

 

There is also a tutorial Playlist on that github page that goes over everything in pretty good detail.
