Well, this is getting a bit OT. From a financial perspective (point in time where you refinance an investment), (crowd)-funding is a logical and extreme point-of-sale shift in a product's life cycle. It's moving the point of a product's re-financing (sale) further forward. We have:

standard refinance: sale of product to customer -> EA (sale of incomplete/unfinished product with promise to finish later) -> pre-order (sale of the promise to deliver a product that is purported to be nearing completion) -> (crowd) funding (sale of the promise to deliver a product that is being planned/in the early stages of being worked on).

But again, I think that this is getting too far OT. To me, all I care about is that I'm stupidly happy enough to jump at the chance of splurging for a new model, and will pre-order the "Fan-tom" with a big smile on my face 🙂
