fredclan Posted February 8, 2023 Posted February 8, 2023 (edited) just experimented. 13900ks and 4090 was giving me around 60 fps with my settings...I had E Cores disabled in bios and 8 P Cores at 6.0...changing nothing else,,, I used Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and left cores 1 thru 4 at 6.0 and took cores 5 thru 8 to 3.2. FPS jumped to mostly steady 90 fps in multiple scenarios....can anyone duplicate? Before: 8 P cores at 6.0; 8 E cores parked = 60fps After: 4 P cores at 6.0; 4 P cores at 3.2; 8 E cores parked = 90fps let me emphasize...the only change i made was taking 4 P cores down to 3.2 from 6.0 Edited February 9, 2023 by fredclan
5ephir0th Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 Maybe you was power limited? I've been pretty happy with my rig's 60ish performance... even after this 'update' and didn't bother tuning anything with this CPU. Out of curiosity though... when going through BIOS after the initial setup, I noticed 'Legacy Game Compatibility Mode' in one of the menus. I know this is a fix for some DRM crap. I guess some old games see P cores and E cores as 2 machines... Basically, all it does is 'park' the E cores. They can be re-enabled with numlock at any time when in Windows. I wonder if this would have the same effect, hmm. I guess I have to try. Well, that's not the answer you were looking for. I'll give it a shot sometime later (when I 're-enable' DCS sometime later ), by disabling E cores both ways... see what happens.
fredclan Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 I don't think I was power limited with 1000 watt psu. Parking the E cores is not the variable that made the difference...it was taking 4 P cores to 3.2
j9murphy Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 By power limited he meant that your cpu was probably throttling because it was reaching its maximum draw allowed. Has nothing to do with your power supply. By turning down the other cores it may have prevented the throttling. You can use hwinfo64 to see what's going on if you have a good understanding of how overclocking really works. Overclocking raptor lake effectively is pretty nuanced compared to previous gens.
fredclan Posted February 9, 2023 Author Posted February 9, 2023 i always monitored with msi afterburner graphs....never were any of the 8 cores running at less than 6.0. so I dont think throttling was taking place...it is interesting that the power draw is roughly the same with the 4 cores slowed to 3.2
