Moxica Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 (edited) Text to speech is not ready to replace voice acting yet; As in they are just annoying. That said; My own acting voice s*cks as well. It would be nice to have access to someone that could read a (good) script. It would lead me to upload more single missions. Also: Is there someone I could have review/assist me on mission(s) where I'm stuck in progress? TJTAS Posted February 22, 2023 Posted February 22, 2023 what text to speech app are you using?. The DCS Radio Message generator does a decent job even if it does seem to be abandoned and doesn't use the full range of voices you can dl for windows. I've been playing with a program called Panopreter which is $60 to buy and will use all the voices available in windows.

It's like having Stephen Hawking at the other end. cfrag Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Unfortunately, Text-to-speech software is indeed still somewhere in the 'uncanny valley': recognizable as speech, yet still immediately recognizable as synthetic. There is something about synthetic speech that sticks out like a sore thumb. I've used it in a few missions, and wasn't delighted. But it got the job done, and the requirements weren't too high. A project I worked with used TTS in a commercial game, with decidedly mixed results and some harsh feedback. That being said, we should also recognize that voice acting is an art form. Simply getting someone to read some lines for you doesn't guarantee that it sounds good. Far from it - even if they have talent (see 'Rising Squall' - some of their voice acting is cringe-worthy at best; still a fun campaign). And even if you have access to great voice talent, you can still trash it all with your audio production toolchain. So don't get your hopes up for text to speech. It won't replace voice talent anytime soon, and doesn't solve your mixer problems - but it is a workable stop-gap (and getting better) for most non-commercial mission designers. And yes, if you can get real people to read for you - do it. Just don't expect too much. 1
TJTAS Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 As someone who really hates their own voice TTS is really my only option. one thing i've found with TTS is that strict "english" (or substitute whatever language you are working in) doesn't work. For an example a common shortening like "Recon" will not give you a good result. Instead you might end up spelling it "Reeconn" to get it to sound right in a tts engine. 2
TEMPEST.114 Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 There are also apps like VoiceMod to disguse your own voice such that they sound fully human but NOTHING like you. When you really need something with more 'energy' or 'voice acting' than straight TTS then 'VoiceMod works brilliantly. That being said, ED should put TTS inside the API for scripters / mission editor designers to use, which supports n number of voices (included in the miz file) 2
