Bucic Posted June 30, 2023 Author Posted June 30, 2023 (edited) https://www.reddit.com/r/Monitors/comments/cwnmey/wide_colour_gamut_better_for_games_or_just/ The information in the thread confirmed what I initially guessed - "better" will bring problems. Suddenly articles like this one are on the table for me, addressing a problem I didn't realize even existed Taming the Wide Gamut using sRGB Emulation | PCMonitors.info — https://pcmonitors.info/articles/taming-the-wide-gamut-using-srgb-emulation/ -> SOLUTION sRGB Emulation (Gamut Clamp / Wide Gamut Saturation Fix) - Nvidia and AMD GPUs - YouTube — I'm also pretty disappointed with the lack of proper hardware Gamma adjustment in this monitor. Instead it only comes with some gamma "profiles" which unsurprisingly lack any description. EDIT: Quote @user-np1he4mu2u 1 year ago I've applied this to one of my wide gamut monitors and performed display profiling. (No calibration other than OSD tweaks to set the whitepoint to D65 since the clamp is already limiting RGB output) The results are superb in terms of color accuracy. DeltaE of 0.56. However, since this kind of software clamp limits the output of the RGB values from the GPU, some amount of banding on gradients is inevitable. With this fix, you cannot earn accuracy without paying the price of gradient performance. My understanding is that the RGB output values will be more limited(more banding introduced) if the original color gamut of the display is wider. Therefore, this fix is inferior compared to hardware clamp like sRGB mode on some monitors. However, this fix gives us a choice between color accuracy and gradient performance, so it is definitely a plus! Quote @PCMonitors 1 year ago (edited) That's correct and a good point, which I've clarified in the article. There are certainly benefits to having well-tuned sRGB emulation on the monitor itself. But this solution is good for general consumption or where a flexible sRGB emulation setting on the monitor isn't provided. For manipulating fine gradients or working with very subtle variations of shade I'd generally advise a full calibration using either the native gamut (assuming colour-aware workflow) or sRGB emulation setting if the monitor has one that's suitably flexible. Always best to correct as much as possible on the monitor. The GPU-level changes made with the GPU gamut clamp can be rather dramatic. Quote @user-np1he4mu2u 1 year ago @PCMonitors Hope sRGB mode on monitors become a standard:) Quote @user-np1he4mu2u On LG 27GP850-B this mode is available through the LG OSC software. Not surprisingly it greyes out many other settings in the menus, leaving you with just brightness and contrast adjustments available. -Relax- Posted June 30, 2023 Posted June 30, 2023 Ok i wonder now that the last posts goes so serious about that srgb thing. You was looking for a budget monitor and all the monitors you mentioned in the first post are ips/ah ips panel and i highly doubt they will have better picture quality than the nano ips panel here from the lg, even if they have some color profiles. Specially in that sense i mentioned with more "color-steps". I dont know maybe you need to look for another price range. Or if possible try more monitors side by side if not happy.

The problem I'm facing isn't model-specific. It applies to all monitors with wide color gamut which will present colors as oversaturated in most cases an average gamer faces. I applied the fix per the PCMonitors.info instructions and I'm more or less happy with the results.
