I have the side thumb 4-way hat set to PTT for the various radios/discord PTT. I noticed the other day that if I, for this example, push forward on the hat to transmit, if the switch moves in any lateral direction while depressed, the switch will release until it's centered again.

I opened the virpil config software and confirmed this to happen on ALL of the 4 or 8 way hat switches.

Is this a problem with my particular grip? Or do others experience this as well?

This does not happen with my TM joystick/throttle, pushing a hat in a given direction and then deflecting slightly left or right does not cause it to release, or stop sending signal.

Is this something that can be fixed in the software? I'm not very familiar with how that thing works.

This is done to prevent diagonal presses. Let's say you push a hat UP and then go UP-RIGHT. You will have only UP button activated at first, but as soon as UP-RIGHT diagonal is activated the UP button will get deactivated.

You can fix that if You configure hats as 8w hats instead of default 4w. But keep in mind that it will result in occasional diagonal presses activation.

In the picture you can see how to "fix" the side thumb hat.

It's doing some really strange stuff.

If I press forward only, it lights up buttons 2 and 3, if I off-axis slightly to the right, button 4 will also light up, and PTT will cease.

I really only want button 3 when I press forward, why two is being pressed as well, I don't know.

Button 2 is central press of the switch. You will always see it activated there, even if carefully try to press the switch to a side. But in games, normally, only a directional press will work without the central press. You can make sure if that yourself.

Also, I can see that You have non-default  side thumb hat configs which will result in the hat working differently from what I mentioned above. So I suggest that you change buttons number from 0s to 2,3,4,5,6 respectively, press save vpc device and then go to joystick tester or game and test how the hat operates.

PS I'm a bad picture editor 🙂

I changed it to that after the screenshot, it's now as you show. But it still cancels button 3 if I move the hat slightly to one side or the other, causing my voice transmissions to cut off.

Does it work like that in game and joystick tester? If that's correct then I don't know what might be causing that.  Because I just checked the same config with my gear but I don't have the issue that You have. Just make sure that You have 8W mode instead of 4W and if the issue is still there then maybe you need to contact virpil support? A heard a lot of times that they are very helpful.

Below, there a video of me doing the following:

1. Pressing the center of the hat (button 2 in joystick tester)

2 Pressing UP (button 3 in joystick tester)

3. Pressing diagonally UP-LEFT, UP-RIGHT (buttons 3-4, 3-6). Button 3 does not get deactivated.

Throttle 4-way hat with push...

Forward = Zoom in

Backwards = Zoom out

Up = Center TIR

Down = 3x Zoom or zoom reset

PUSH = PTT Comms

It's my most used Hat switch on TMWH

The Trustmaster hats do not have this problem. If you push a 4 way hat in a given direction on a TM stick, it is generally locked in that direction until you release it.

NOT the case with the virpil, they act more like the 8 way hats on the TM, which can "roll" around to other buttons much easier.

Ok, setting the hat to be 8W fixed this button canceling.

The problem is now with Discord. In Discord's "Keybinds" section, I have two buttons mapped to "PUSH TO MUTE", so that when I transmit in game to SRS by pressing my PTT button for either of the two radios, currently button 3 (forward) and 4 (right) on my hat, this prevents double transmitting to Discord.

Because I have a PTM set to both buttons 3 and 4 , if I press button 3 and off-axis toward button 4, the PTM will stop muting. If I off-axis toward button toward button 6 (left), it does not stop muting.

No it does not..... you have to program the action in TARGET. Normal function when you push a button, flip a switch with TMWH , you get a "pulse" on/off no matter how long you hold it down. Otherwise if you want your gun trigger to keep firing your guns, your flap switch to keep operating flaps, you have to designate the operation as a "Hold" function. So on my 4-way hat switch the Zoom in/out, 3 X Zoom functions and PTT are Hold presses, Center TIR is  "Pulse Press. All done with TARGET GUI programming. I have been using nothing but TMWH and TARGET SCRIPT & GUI for well over a decade. It is the best All-in-One software for any HOTAS system...... PERIOD.

Not how it works for me, and I've never used TARGET for anything other than shutting off the LED's on the throttle. I don't know how to make programs, and I've never tried.

It's a straight up DirectX input right into Windows stick.

Can't explain why yours is otherwise.
