This link illustrates and specifies (Western) ATC radar vectoring pretty well.

Radar vectoring procedure and method | IVAO Documentation Library

Hopefully something like this can be integrated into DCS ATC.  And not just for players, but to direct AI aircraft as well.

I believe the head of the green triangle, to the "approach gate", is about 1 NM outside of the instrument procedure's final approach fix.  Per the FAA Instrument Procedures Handbook, "The approach gate is an imaginary point used by ATC to vector aircraft to the final approach course. The approach gate is established along the final approach course 1 NM from the final approach fix (FAF) on the side away from the airport and is located no closer than 5 NM from the landing threshold."

"Arriving aircraft usually are vectored to intercept the final approach course, except with vectors for a visual approach, at least 2 NM outside the approach gate unless one of the following exists:

1. When the reported ceiling is at least 500 feet above the minimum vectoring altitude or minimum IFR altitude and the visibility is at least 3 NM (report may be a pilot report if no weather is reported for the airport), aircraft may be vectored to intercept the final approach course closer than 2 NM outside the approach gate but no closer than the approach gate.

2. If specifically requested by a pilot, ATC may vector aircraft to intercept the final approach course inside the approach gate but no closer than the final approach fix (FAF). For a precision approach, aircraft are vectored at an altitude that is not above the glideslope/glidepath or below the minimum glideslope/glidepath intercept altitude specified on the approach procedure chart. For a non-precision approach, aircraft are vectored at an altitude that allows descent in accordance with the published procedure.

The image here shows vectoring paths to an intercept of an ILS (or other instrument approach procedure) to airport arrivals.

Different types of arrivals for military jets might be to the approach gate for the Instrument Approach Procedure (IAP), for flights of 1 or 2.  Or to a more rapid, 400-500 kts descent to the overhead break (about 2,000' AGL) into the VFR landing pattern, weather permitting, for flights of 1-4 aircraft.
