Ray Tracing is definitely not as good with these

RT isn't good with anything except 'maybe' the 4090

DLSS and FSR are crutches/bandaids for hardware that can't handle a new feature introduced 2 generations ago

It's not even "super resolution", it's resampling lower resolution, it would be a worthwhile addition if it managed to upscale higher from the highest resolution

Intel I5 13600k / AsRock Z790 Steel Legend / MSI  4080s 16G Gaming X Slim / Kingston Fury DDR5 5600 64Gb / Adata 960 Max / HP Reverb G2 v2

Rhino FFB / Virpil MT50 Mongoost T50 Throttle, T50cm Grip, VFX Grip, ACE Rudder / WinWing Orion2 Navy, UFC&HUD, PTO2, 2x MFD1, PFP7 / Logitech Flight Panel / VKB SEM V  / 2x DIY Bodnar Button Panels

WRONG. All nvidia cards from 3070 and up can handle RT just fine. You dont have to run everything on ultra for it to look good. As for DCS the 4070Ti Super can handle vr just fine.

Try RTX3070 with The Last of Us P1, Hogwart Legacy, RE4, Forspoken... even in 1080p, texture quality is poor and/or there will be lots of stuttering, even with disabling RT. The RTX3070 is a rather bad example about "how good" an "RTX GPU" can handle modern games.

Nevertheless, RTX4070TiS is definitely a very decent GPU for both DCS and non-DCS-contents

In other words, you're gimping all other fidelity to make 1 feature look good

The extra VRAM on the 16GB model won't help you as the chip doesn't have the raw power to fully utilize that much memory.

Thanks for that. The fact that it is available with 16GB VRAM for a somewhat reasonable price was actually the reason why I was thinking about the 4060.

If one wants 16GB VRAM, then the 4070 series become very expensive.

Where I live, the 7800XT goes for approx. E540 to approx. E600, with 16GB VRAM.

The 4070 series start with a 4070 with 12GB for approx. E585, which makes it kind of the same price range, but then with less VRAM.

If you want 4070 series with 16GB, then you end up with a 4070 Ti Super starting at approx. E880, which is too much in my opinion.

So that makes the question: 4070 12GB vs. 7800GT but I think I already got my answer.

About energy efficiency, if energy price is really a problem, you can easily undervolt the 7800XT with Adrenalin software... but if you play less than 6 hours a day, energy price shouldn't be a problem.

The concern is not energy price, but more about introducing too much heat into the system.

Your reasoning is correct.

About the heat, my 3060ti with just a modest undervolt goes down 10C° on average. Mid-range AMD cards like the 7800XT should be similar.

I'm in the same boat as you. Except I'm not upgrading. I have to buy a complete new PC and don't want to get one with a card & components etcI also have to decide that I'll regret, and I can't wait till next year or whenever the 5XXX series comes out. I also have to decide if I want an i5, i7 or i9.  I don't use VR but I do mostly Multiplayer.

Ryzen 7 7800; GTX 4070; 32 GB RAM; Monitor 27" 1440p
