Turd Ferguson Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 (edited) Hi all, I've currently got a Reverb G2, was a very nice upgradevto the CV1 I was using however it's 3 years old so I was planning to get a Varjo Aero to replace it, wirh WMR reaching EOL with Microsoft was even more keen. As that has been now discontinued and I can only find used in the UK, not prepared to shell out for a used one in case it goes wrong. My budget is £1300 and have been looking at the Quest Pro. I like the idea of Foveated Rendering and also the pass though sounds nice too. Can anyone who's gone from a G2 to a Quest Pro or any Pro users give their opinions on it? Is it a better headset to use than the G2? How is the visual quality compared to it with the lack of DP input. Would I be better off waiting to see what the G2 community comes up with to replace WMR. I only started looking into the Quest Pro on Friday night and am a bit bamboozled by what I'd need to know or puchase along side it, link cable for example. Can anyone offer any advice please? Thanks Edited January 29, 2024 by Turd Ferguson Oh hell, let's go nuts. Swords for forty eight thousand
nikoel Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 (edited) Heya This thread is a few months old but is literally what you're asking. The G2 Owners (I was one of) upgrading to QuestPro If you have 20min watch this video as well: Finally many of us have moved on to Virtual Desktop. This gives me the same image quality as cable but with WiFi (Good router is needed for this), so no cable and is revolutionary for dogfighting and just overall headset balance Honourable mention goes to Bigscreen Beyond and [less honourable] goes to Pimax Crystal. Varjo XR4 is what you're truly after but don't do it to yourself; a divorce will surely follow Quest 3 is also a good consideration. Does a few things better than the Pro, but for DCS only I still think Pro wins out mainly because of the efforts of one man who gave us QuadViews (Eye tracking dynamic res). The design and build quality is superior and so are colours. Everything else, including the resolution Quest 3 is better If you go for the Pro, just pay the little bit extra for the aftermarket comfort kit. It's good. Edited January 29, 2024 by nikoel

gorzasty Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 I swap my G2 for Quest Pro. One thing is great with this headset - lenses. But I could not stand screen door effect. I sold it and bought Q3.QP also has very weak headphones and for me was uncomfortable. I can not recommend it over HP G2. Especially if you can handle 60Hz. 72Hz i Oculus is much more demanding and we all know how bad DCS is optimized. DFR also dont count on it. Sometimes it gives even worst performance than without it... Q3 solved my problems that I have with QP, but it is also not perfect. If you can wait for next headsets than I can recommend it the most. Dogmanbird Posted January 29, 2024 Posted January 29, 2024 i also use g2, a Qpro and a Q3. If I had to pick one it would be the Q3

Thanks I bought a used QP recently going from a Pico 4 (which is basically the same Res as a G2). The resolution of the QP is lower but the quality is very good. I notice less screen door with the QP than P4. It might be due to the canting of the screens. The biggest advantage for me is DFR. I get great resolution and performance. I have not used the Q3 but resolution is basically identical to the P4. I managed to get an immaculate used QP for £300. Most on eBay are going for about £450. That is still cheaper than a Q3 and I think it is a much better deal. If you can try a QP from someone who has one then give it a go. Better if you can compare it to a Q3. 1 9800x3d; rtx5080 FE; 64Gb RAM 6000MHz; 2Tb NVME; Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4).
Turd Ferguson Posted January 30, 2024 Author Posted January 30, 2024 Thanks for taking the time to reply. The DFR is something i"m really looking forward to, the passthrough too. I've just bought a small keyboard to use as a keyboard unit in the Apache so that'll be a real plus. I've never experienced screen door even with the DK2 I started with, probably due to an eye condition I have. I'll probably keep the G2 however my wife came in yesterday and told me she'd ordered me a Quest Pro so hopefully be in in a couple of days. Oh hell, let's go nuts. Swords for forty eight thousand
markturner1960 Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 I really don’t understand the negative comments further up. I went from G2 to the pro and love it. It is super comfortable NOT-having it clamped on your face, the lenses are awesome and performance on my less than top of the range machine is really good, locked at 36 fps using 72hz. I use DFR and have super clear resolution ……It is really smooth in 95% of situations and very reliable, I never get freezes etc. I use a charging cable, not the quest link cable. At £400 or so which you can get it for, it’s a real bargain, considering it was £1500 on release. Don’t think twice……. My wife recently got a Q3 but I have yet to try it as a comparison, will do shortly…. As a comparison, To the G2, I am getting better performance and image clarity on the same rig. 1 System specs: PC1 :Scan 3XS Ryzen 5900X, 64GB Corsair veng DDR4 3600, EVGA GTX 3090 Win 10, Quest Pro, Samsung Odyssey G9 Neo monitor.

I am finding that I notice a very slight lag in the rendering of the foveated region. The peripheral regions do not show all the shadows etc so it becomes noticeable when you move your eyes around quickly. It’s hard to describe but essentially in the corner of my eye I don’t see shadows or con trails, then they suddenly pop in when I look straight at them. Have you noticed this? 9800x3d; rtx5080 FE; 64Gb RAM 6000MHz; 2Tb NVME; Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4).
Dogmanbird Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 it's interesting that there's only a handful of us who seem to notice the lag
markturner1960 Posted February 7, 2024 Posted February 7, 2024 If you really look , yes you may notice that, but it is so quick and I don’t really spend time snapping my eyes around quickly…….its a non factor for me, I have the foveated area set at approx 275% and the peripheral at 25%. Works great for me. There is a companion app that makes adjusting these settings easy. The lag is less noticable with VD than with oculus link cable, but the image quality overall is better with link. I have experimented with lots of QVFR settings using the companion app and have found a sweet spot. It is most noticable low to the ground. High in the sky I only noticed it with contrails. 9800x3d; rtx5080 FE; 64Gb RAM 6000MHz; 2Tb NVME; Quest Pro (previous rift s and Pico 4).
