My own phirst impressions of the Phantom

The F-4E has finally arrived. I am so happy about it and have never let it go all during the weekend. The F-4E is one of my favourite aircraft along with the A-7 and Mig-21.

Flying the F-4E requires a lot of skill piloting it and not getting into bad situations as it will behave as a falling brick if you do. The weapons need to be on target and close enough. Jester helps, but the command wheel isn’t so easy to use, when you are at the tail of a bandit and he will tell you that, but won’t do the lock on. The systems can be complicated but there is none of that complex electronic wizardry of the F-15SE, F-16 etc. Here, the effort of good piloting low altitude flying and abrupt evasive reactions are rewarded with not getting killed.

Of course, I am still learning and maybe there is a way to lock on without Jester’’s help. Using the sidewinders is somewhat easier, but again you must be on the six of the enemy and the enemy must not be very evasive.

Overall A/A reminds me of my Mig 21 air battles, although with the F-4E you are in a larger and somewhat more capable aircraft.

With regards to A/G, I am still learning and my main shortcoming is not understanding when to use the trigger button or the jettison button. Although I fuzed my bombs and dropped them on target using the bombing table by informing Jester, his input isn’t apparent and they did not detonate. Perhaps because they were jettisoned instead of released as weapons?
Not sure about that. Still learning. Landing is challenging, but once you learn to utilise the delta wing AoA braking, it is quite doable. Lots of fun, coming back to base alive.

The other good thing is that the aircraft’s heritage and the available colourful liveries, enable one to create many many hypothetical and even historical missions to try and complete and learn by doing so.

Thanks to HB this module will keep me busy for a long time.
