Hey all. I have an opportunity to switch from Comcast to Verizon FiOS, and I'm looking for any first hand user info/ opinions about it. I have the fiber box in my yard already.

Specifically- Fios comes with a router, (called a "wireless router"- but this is supposed to be for add'l computers- not the main one.) What I want to know is- have you had to configure this for online play? Was it a PiTA? ANything I need to know?

The published specs for FiOS are 20/5 MBPS. Comcast is supposed to be 6/1 however mine seems to be faster than this pretty consistently (often closer to 10 MBPS down)

My main reason for considering this is the HDTV package, but they are offering me $99 for both...

If your setting up wireless on Vista, its almost automatic. As far as configuring, its pretty much the same as a regular router.

I have Verizon FiOs which is an excellent choice next to Optimum Online. The router set up is very user friendly.

In the router set up you actually have a Tab called "Enable Gaming Applications" it seems their router is by far the most user friendly router I have seen. It will actually open up ports on it's own to allow you to connect via internet to applications you choose to open up.

I.E.

I click on xifre, if xfire's ports are closed and won't allow a connect it will open them for me so I do not have to go in and do it my self. Same with MSN, Black Shark, or any other type of MP games. As far as the router goes you really do not have to do anything.

Was it a PiTA? - Not sure what you mean here, sorry.

Overall, very simple, user friendly, no problems at all with it and I've had it for about four years now.

I will get Verizon FIOS the hot minute it becomes available. I'll get 3 times the bandwidth for less than half the price I am paying right now for cable internet thru Charter. Unfortunately it will prolly be a couple of years before it gets to my neck of the woods.
