I wanted to give VD another try, so I bought a better Wi-Fi extender today (one that supports WiFi 6 instead of just WiFi 5). My first tests definitely came out better than with the previous WiFi extender. This was about 2 hours ago. Now I wanted to try out some more but all of a sudden it won´t connect to my PC. It says, or rather "claims" that the streamer is using an older version and I need to update it. So I used the "Check for updates" button on the Streamer App and it says that there are no updates. I even deleted and reinstalled a freshly downloaded version without any change. Version of the streamer is 1.30.5.

EDIT: my bad. Had the HMD App on beta and streamer still on release version.

One other thing: Is the automatic option of the motion reprojection (SSW) really such garbage? On my tests at least it normally failed to kick in appropriatley. With ASW from Oculus you hardly even realise it, when it kicks in.

I believe that you need a Wi-Fi router rather than extender but I might be wrong.

SSW is not as good as ASW but tends to be smoother when below the half refresh rate.

My quick tests showed, that it works nicely with the WiFi 6 extender.

As I said, my gripe with SSW is mainly, that it doesn´t seem to kick in properly when dropping below refresh rate.

Well…I clicked on the „Beta Channel“ for the HMD app and then simply forgot about it.

But I guess that is the kind of snarky comment that I get, if I openly admit my own mistake, right?
And also what does the one have to do with the other? Do I not deserve SSW Auto to work properly because of it?

I am just saying, what I observed. It was not meant to be judgemental. I would be glad if someone told me that all I needed to do is to change some setting  and then it would work…

Update:

I asked in the VD discord and got a reply very quickly. The problem was the Turbo mode that I had activated, not in the OXR toolkit companion but in the Quad Views settings. Deactivating it, made SSW to work properly in automatic mode.
I don‘t know if this was otherwise common knowledge already.

I don't use SSW because the artifacts are pretty horrible compared to ASW. Also with ASW you can easily toggle between all the settings with HOTAS and keyboard binds. This is the main reason why I prefer oculus link to VD. I hope they improve this soon.

Turbo mode causes a lot of issues for me. Both in VD and oculus link. I don't see any performance improvement so I don't use it.

@Qcumber

Totally agree on your comparison of ASW vs SSW.

Turbo mode worked without issues for me with Quest Link and also in conjunction with ASW. To me it looked, as if it cured some microstutters.
I will try using VD with SSW off for now.

I wish Meta would just incorporate the better codecs into Quest Link. HEVC 10 looks great to me.

A couple of updates ago turbo started to cause meta link cable to crash so I stopped using it. In VR there is more microstutter noticable in the frame times, which turbo smooths out. However I don't actually notice any difference. I only realized it is there when I have the performance overlay on.
