I launched a C-802 in direct mode to a waypoint about 50 miles away. As you can see in the screenshot my aim was pretty good as the missile is very close to the enemy ships. However it did not attack the ship, simply flew right over.

I thought launching in this way the missile will seek out an enemy ship near the SPI?

You probably for got to set correct target size in the SMS for the missile ship rcs and 802ak target size setting-1.pdf

That pdf is not up to date. Also the Viggen's RB-15 is currently bugged, so it would help to see the track. Might be the same bug.

if you have a mission with multiple ships, you can actually see the RCS sizes are different, the bricks will be either larger or smaller.

Tested it and they track fine. They start actual tracking at around 5miles.

Here's the screenshot showing different signatures: small , large, medium
