Hey folks. I just upgraded from an RTX 3070 to RTX 4080 Super and love it except for a couple of puzzles.

First, my FPS is now mostly smooth and steady at 80fps with stable frame times, but every so often the FPS will fall to 40, stay there for a second or so, and then return to 80, and these changes are not related to the load on the GPU. Sometimes it happens in a graphics intense environment, and sometimes not. See the attached DCS FPS image. My old 3070 never did this.

Second. I used to be able to limit my fps using the graphics slider in DCS with no issues, and now if I try to limit FPS below 80 the frame times become unstable and the VR image stutters slightly

These problems are not related to the module I am flying. This happens flying the Huey or the F18/Supercarrier.

Any tips are greatly appreciated!

What headset are you using?

Just guessing but…

Sounds like you have your headset set to 80Hz thus you get 80 FPS as long as your hardware can deliver it. If your hardware can not deliver it, it falls back to motion reprojection at half rate. This is why you see 40 FPS briefly. For most headsets there are ways to turn motion reprojection off, but I prefer having it in auto as a fallback option for the exact scenario as you describe it.
And it doesn‘t really matter, if it‘s your CPU or GPU that can‘t deliver the FPS…and also even though you don‘t perceive a certain sequence as particularily „graphics intense“ it might still put enough load on your GPU to drop below the desired 80 FPS.

Again…a lot of guesswork:

If you have set your headset to 80Hz but limit the FPS below that, of course it stutters. I don‘t really know what the motion reprojection logic makes out of this. Maybe it gets borked by this approach as well, otherwise it would simply revert to 40FPS again.
Never tried this…because it doesn‘t make much sense.

Firstly, if you're running motion reprojection, try turning it off completely and see how you fair. I found that motion reprojection was costing frames, so it was dropping from 90 to 45 when otherwise if i had it disabled, would remain above 90 consistently.

Secondly, are you able to advise:

1) What headset are you using

2) What settings are you using

3) Is this on 'Instant Action', 'Campaigns', 'Multiplayer servers', etc?

After the last major update I've been noticing some performance issues - primarily on multiplayer servers similar to what you describe. Works fine, then drops dramatically for a moment, then back again. Seems to be a CPU bound issue.

I note that your 3070 didn't do this - but was your upgrade around the same timing as the DCS update? (Not saying it is definitely DCS, but there are definitely numerous issues that have been introduced during the last update as there's some major code changes that could be a contributing factor).

Thanks for the tip re motion reproduction. I have never seen that option. Is it turned on/off in Oculus?  DCS? or NVIDEA?  I am using the Quest 3.

I have experienced this plying instant action (Huey) and missions (F18/Supercarrier)

ave experienced this in both instant action (Huey) and missions (F18/Super Carrier).   My graphics settings are pretty much maxed out.

I see no point in limiting your FPS, your headset already does that for you. Which one are you using?

I am using the Quest 3.  I was under the impression that limiting FPS could reduce the workload of the GPU and therefore heat. I am not sure where I got that idea...maybe just my intuition. I have been shooting for getting my DCS graphics and Oculus settings to get the best VR image quality consistent with stable 60 fps. I am a newbie to all of this and I really appreciate the tips!

You need to use the Oculus Debug Tool.

Also you need to check if the last Nvidia Driver 560.70 are working ok for you. Peolpe say that there is a problem with the last driver and oculus and it is better to go back at 552.44 (I didn't try yet)

I have a lot of stuttering and performance issue with the last update (not always but I can't play the campaign FIWOS because of stuttering even if I get all the fps that I need). I have a 4080s and quest 3

Well but that‘s like saying, you bought yourself a Porsche, but you only go 50km/h because it‘s better for the engine.

Just like a car and it‘s engine, your PC should be build to be able to take the stress of the GPU working at its fullest. If heat becomes a problem, the respective components should throttle themselves back automatically (unless you tinkered with those settings).

In VR you usually want to strive to match the headsets refresh rate. So unless the Q3 offers a 60Hz mode, 60 FPS will most likely not make you very happy. As far as I know, the lowest refresh rate is 72Hz. Go for that and try to achieve 72FPS in most scenarios.
ASW is on AUTO by default. Since you are still new to this, my advice would be to leave it at that. It will provide a smooth gameplay experience, even if you drop below the 72FPS (and it will revert to 36FPS). It comes at the cost of some artefacts or wobbling occasionally, when it kicks in.

Google „motion reprojection“ and/or „asynchronous space warp“, if you want to know more about it.

Thank for the tips, Phantom. I will get this figured out sooner or later! 🙂

We all learned the hard way at the beginning. I spent a month changing settings instead of playing the game. It wasn't pretty.

As others are telling you, set the Quest 3 to 72Hz. I have the same headset and my 3060ti is able to keep 72fps most of the time, so your 4080 certainly has enough juice to reach that too, as long as you don't go nuts with eyecandy or oversampling.

Aah - Not sure about oculus. I have zero experience with Meta sorry.

But- since it hasn't been mentioned here, please make sure that CPU Core Parking is disabled.

I jumped on last night to find that I had the same symptoms as you - and realized that Windows somehow (probably after an update) decided to re-disable CPU Core parking again.

To disable (or check it's disabled):

  1. Open Registry (Regedit)
  2. Navigate to Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power\PowerSettings
  3. Right-click the PowerSettings folder and search for dec35c318583. You'll get a folder that ends with dec35c318583.
  4. Check the ValueMax. This should be set to 0. If not, double-click it and change it.
  5. Restart your computer.

Hopefully this is the cause, and it's a simple fix.

Cheers

Thanks DZ. I'll give that a try.  BTW, is core parking something that the Project Lasso app performs?

I'm not sure if Lasso deals with core parking. I think it only deals with limiting apps to certain cores - not actually dealing with the parking side from my understanding.

Either way please let us know how you go if you change the registry (and restart the PC) to see if it makes any difference.
