pauldy Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Yah, maybe i'm being a noobie here but.. out of all enemy armor, the T-80 seems to have the highest HP. After dropping CBU-97s, other armored vehicles are already wrecked.. except the T-80 After strafing the tank from 0.6-0.3 nautical miles, the T-80 is still going strong.. Now whenever i expect a T-80 in theatre i go "oh boy, prepare to lose lots of 30mm rounds.." or just hit it with Mavericks if possible.. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
ARM505 Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 A T-80 is designed to try and resist 120mm APFSDS (basically a giant metal dart) ammo from the front aspect at least, and be very resistant to all kinds of tank killing ammo in general. Despite videos showing A-10's strafing tanks with giant sparks and dust clouds flying everywhere, you're unlikely to destroy a T-80 with the 30mm, and a CBU bomblet would have to land precisely on a vulnerable spot to kill one. The Maverick, on the other hand, is ideally suited to killing tanks. You're pretty much describing real life.
CHola Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 When strafing T-80s, try to maintain steeper descending angle, than against softer targets. This is because you need to hit T-80 in the top armor, where it's weakest. Once you get enough practise, you'll be able to take out a whole T-80 company with GAU-8, only. Cheers, Cola Cheers, CHola
RedTiger Posted June 5, 2009 Posted June 5, 2009 Well, its a TANK. :P I'm glad that someone finds it a difficult nut to crack. Flight simmers in general tend to have a very unrealistic understanding of just how tough a tank can be, something I call "fish in a barrel" syndrome. ;) As ARM505 said, the A-10's gun is puny compared to the types of things a tank is designed to survive when being hit fromt he front. Even a CBU-97 would probably need to hit the engine to knock it out. This is strange, though, because I've never had any problems killing them. Using Mk-20s, they asplode just fine. I usually don't use 97s. Never had any problems with the GAU either, but I like to attack them from the side and rear because its fun to have to pull some lead to hit them. :joystick: Maybe that's why. Killing them with the gun is quite satisfying, I might add. They tend to keep rolling forward as flames begin to come out of the engine before a nice big brew-up.
pauldy Posted June 6, 2009 Author Posted June 6, 2009 Oh well i'd rather mav it anyway :) if possible [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
Vekkinho Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Aren't the CBU-97 a soft armor (BMP, BTR) killers?!! T-80 are designed to survive even the Rockeyes so you best chances are to use Avenger! [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC]
RedTiger Posted June 6, 2009 Posted June 6, 2009 Aren't the CBU-97 a soft armor (BMP, BTR) killers?!! T-80 are designed to survive even the Rockeyes so you best chances are to use Avenger! I'm pretty sure they can be effective vs. tanks if the skeet and submunition find one, I think each little submunition is a shaped charge which can penetrate the top armor of a tank and hit the engine. Wasn't it CBU-97s that stopped that Iraqi tank advance early in the second Gulf War?
