Hi people, Been trying to master the AH-6 little bird and set up an HP reverb VR. problems are the controllers won't pair, but not a game changer.

What I don't know is how to use the goggles in the flight sim. If I close WMR and steam VR, I get a default view in the goggles.

How can I go about getting the monitor view into the goggles so I can ignore the look around on my hotas ?

It's been awhile since I used my G2, but I believe you have to use WMR and open a monitor within the Microsoft House and select DCS on the monitor. Also, if your using the Steam version of DCS, then Steam needs to be run too.

There may also be command line additions to run DCS in WMR and Steam as DCS natively runs OpenXR.

Also, be aware that Windows 11 WMR support is going away. You will need to not update to 24H2 to keep using it. Eventually it will also be dropped from the store.

To me it sounds like you have not selected SteamVR as your OpenXR runtime. You can do that in the SteamVR options.

You can also get rid of SteamVR all together and install „OpenXR tools for windows mixed reality“ from the Microsoft store. Now you select this one as your OpenXR runtime and you‘re good to go.

OK, thanks. I am still trying to figure out open XR, I have that toolkit. I might be trying to run one before the other. Also in the WMR house, my controllers just don't pair so I guess I need to read up on the command lines.

I'll try that and probably be back with more questions.

Well, I have made some progress, finally got the controllers to pair. I know I am doing something wrong or out of sequence. I got to my desktop and launched DCS to the AH-6.

What I see is the very same as if no VR.

From a cold start, how should I execute all this so the display is in the goggles ?

“Enable VR Headsets” is ticked under the VR tab in the DCS settings?

Drop your “C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS\Logs\dcs.log” file in here (may just be a text document named “dcs” if Windows is hiding file extensions) so we can review, might be a runtime issue in which case DCS will start in 2D.

I have a HP G2 as well.

Back to basics:

1. Start WMR first and make sure it works and you see the “home” when you put on your headset;

2. Start DCS from launcher. Make sure it is set to “VR” (i.e. guy with HMD) and not 2D (i.e. monitor Icon).

You will automatically start in VR and should be good to go. Note this is multi-thread with Open XR.

On the hand controllers, they do work after a fashion, but not as precise as I like and awkward to use. DCS was obviously not designed to use the controllers. I just use the mouse now, easier to use and more precise.

OK, been arond the world with this and results are the same. I did find and set enable VR headset, done.

I would like some screenshots, what keys do I use in DCS ?

also, I have the mouse enabled, but just not there.

attached is my DCS log file

I get into my home fine, I can even bring up my desktop, What I can't find is the launcer you describe. I have DCS pined on my taskbar is the only way I see to launch it.

With the reverb on, DCS starts then immediately shuts down.

Sorry for being a nooby pest.

Ok, so based on the log file it appears that DCS knows that you're using the Windows Mixed Reality (WMR) runtime, but it is not detecting the headset itself. As you can see from the below lines it waits for the headset for 10 seconds, then gives up and starts DCS in 2D. This is normal when starting up if you haven't connected a VR headset, but from what you've described the headset is connected and you can see DCS in the googles, but it's just in 2D.

Just to confirm, this is the log file from when attempting to start DCS in VR when you're wearing the headset and it's connected?

Not owning a G2 myself I can't comment as to why that would be, other than it is.

Further to this you're also running an old version of DCS, and it looks like maybe you need to update your Nvidia graphics driver as well.

You should also go into the DCS controls settings and click the button at the bottom right to disable hot plugging (with hot plugging DCS will constantly scan for new USB devices which can lead to stutters within the game, if you add a new controller just click the Scan devices button there).

Can you send a log file of this then.

You also have tons of what appear to be shader issues. Can you delete your "C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS\fxo" and "C:\Users\username\Saved Games\DCS\metashaders2" directories before starting the game.

I also recommend you update the game as well.

Did you follow this? You need to pick one of these methods to make sure your running your G2 as an OpenXR device. I recommend the "OpenXR Tools for Windows Mixed Reality" which you get from the Microsoft store.

Also as @sleighzysaid, update DCS, do this from 2D, starting DCS should present the new launcher and have a link right below the 2D/VR selector.

I presume the log file is the most recent session and yes, I first start this with the goggles. I did note there is a new version, I will update this and try later. As for my graphics card, the drivers are the latest supplied by Nvidia. The card is not really intended for gaming, but so far does a good job. It is the Nvidia quadro K6000.

I have tried both ways, one session with steam VR and another session with open XRtools. I feel certain this is somthing in my settings, front to back. Why I would like to get a series of screenshots but don't know which keys to use, widows screenshot does not work.

@RotoDan , can you send a log file for this happening. The original log shows that DCS doesn't even think you have a headset connected. The original log also doesn't show an immediate shutdown. If you can repeat that with the reverb on and DCS immediately shutting and attach a new log that more provide more info.

I'll leave the process of starting DCS with a G2 (and any associated screenshots) with @Joch1955 and @Maddaawg as they appear to be more familiar with those aspects.

So couple of questions/comments:

1. Is you game a STEAM or DCS instal? Either way, make sure your game is fully updated and run the repair utility.

2. If you are using any shortcuts with command line parameters, delete them. Command line parameters are no longer required.

3. Do not update drivers or use Mbucchia’s open XR toolkit for now. First thing is to get you up and running.

4. If you do not have it, instal the MS APP “ Open XR tools for WMR”. This has some required settings for WMR. Link:

Post when you are done and we can move on to next steps.

@Joch1955, just a heads-up from the current log attached previously (while you're waiting for feedback for the other items you've requested):

  • this is a standalone DCS installation (non-Steam)
  • there are no shortcuts in use
  • Mbucchia's OpenXR Toolkit is not currently in use, and there are no other API layers installed either (unless this has changed recently)

I don't know about this; I looked up its gaming specs and they seem to be very low. Nvidia does recommend the Quadro RTX6000 but its gaming abilities are significantly better than the K6000.

Follow this, get Steam out of the way as its just one more layer to deal with. Use Open XR tools for WMR from the Microsoft store.

Set DCS to the minimum's by selecting the VR preset.

What's your CPU?

OK, first, my world caved in with a windows update. I was 16 hours into updating DCS which is stand alone and with my slow internets would be over 30 hours.

sleighzy I will try after I get past this updating.

Joch1955, This is a DCS install going back a year, Been using it, now I am trying to use VR. No shortcuts and using MS open XR tools.

Maddaawg, The quadro K6000, is a bit old, not really targeted for gaming, but so far works good with DCS, MSFS, Steams take on helicopters. but won't work with the newer, X-plane versions.

Let me attach the latest log file and update log file. Early in the log file, it has a good breakdown of my system, not including my Saitek X-52 setup.

When you say it runs fine in DCS, do you mean VR or 2D?

@RotoDan, that latest log is just from you opening the launcher. I need a log from when you actually start the game completely (using VR).

The view looks great in 2D, what I haven't been able to do is like the 3D, head position looking around the cockpit and outside view, like real VR.

I have been folowing a couple youtube tutorials how to get that far, and a tone of reading. These goggles need a little fixing about the face mask, work in progress.

Somwhere I lost a UH-60L module but have the newest 1.4 which is OK. I have a hover tutorial training ground, but it is broken, no control of any sort.

For now, cocentrating on the AH-6. Most of my reads and videos are using steam VR, so that is what I will run with for now.

I'll work that up for you next session. If screenshots of my settings will help, I think I can work those up also.

3 more hours, nothing in DCS will launch, either with mixed reality or steam VR.

after a search for DCS, I can get the launcher, pressing launch, I get the empty theater screen and nothing.
