alboon2000 Posted November 18, 2024 Posted November 18, 2024 Hi, I'd like to buy a motion rig (I'm not able to make one myself) and I'm thinking about DOF H3. Or H2, maybe. I fly 99% DCS and 1% MSFS, in VR. Anyway, I'd have some questions I hope someone will be able to answer to : - I don't understand the differences between H3 flight/heli/universal models... Pictures show exactly the same thing. I suppose the price difference comes from the mounting bars but the Universal has more than the Heli and yet is less expensive ?... - does a H3 come with a seat or is it an "option" ? - Motion compensation : I read somewhere it's achievable thanks to a witmotion sensor I'd have to buy separately, and OpenXR. But OpenXR is being discontinued... So, is it still going to work in 5 years ? - even better, if someone has tried both gearboxes (old and new ones), a feedback would be appreciated. - I think I saw lower prices a few days ago for some of the DOF rigs, but I'm not sure. Are they used to making sales some times ? Thank you !
Nascar Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 It is confusing. I think the flight and heli have the new motors. You have to buy a seat. My questions are what mounts each model comes with and whether you have to purchase the metal motor guard separately. Aapje Posted November 23, 2024 Posted November 23, 2024 The seat is always an option for extra cost. OpenXR is the future and not getting discontinued. You are probably being confused with OpenVR (the SteamVR API). Keep in mind that shipping is extra and can be quite costly. For motion compensation there are different options, also depending on what headset you have. A Withmotion sensor coupled with a monthly SRS subscription is one way. They regularly have sales and apparently you can stack partner codes (5%) with the sales. The gearboxes matter most for slow movements and how sensitive you are to cogging differs per person, and having Buttkickers makes you feel it less. But I would just get the one with the gearboxes for flying. 1

Seats, I think most seats will require some level of DIY to get them to fit. Flight, Racing, Heli and Universal are priced differently because of the different motors and gearboxes. Flight and Heli have the smoother (and more expensive) ones. The P models, ditto except the motors are also more powerful (for sustained commercial use, like in a gaming arcade. They can also handle more weight). For 2 and 3-DOF, the Witmotion seems popular. You need the gizmo and the cable for it. Nascar Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 What mounts does the Flight come with? Do you get the wheelbase mount? I own a HP Reverb v1, I'll change for a Pimax if mine is not working anymore. For motion compensation I'll look into it more deeply, but I'd like to avoid any subscription. When you talk about gearboxes, you mean the SFU gearbox upgrade, I suppose ? The website is very unclear, SFU gearboxes are available nowhere, as if they were "default" when buying any of the rigs. Is a buttkicker that useful ? Thank you ! Edited November 24, 2024 by alboon2000
Aapje Posted November 24, 2024 Posted November 24, 2024 The gearboxes are connected to the motors, and they don't sell them separately, since they are worried about people messing up the install. There is an option for people with the old motors to either send in their old motors for a refurb, or to simply buy the new motor+gearbox combo (none of this is on the site, one has to contact them directly for this). Given the high shipping costs, the latter is probably the only one that makes sense. But if you are buying new for flight simming, then you should simply get the rig with the new motor+gearbox combo. And pretty much every testimony I've seen about the buttkicker has been extremely positive. The main downside is that the vibrations can travel to the rest of the room. For that reason, you should put the rig on anti-vibration legs that they sell for washing machines and such. And you might want to join the DOF Reality discord for better help. That's where the real experts are. 1

That goes for both H and P versions. Edited November 24, 2024 by Panzerlang 1
Loadie Posted November 26, 2024 Posted November 26, 2024 I have an H3 with motion compensation and fly in VR. I have MFG crosswind pedals, Virpil T50-CM2 throttle and Apache Collective, and constellation Al-ha stick and base. All work amazingly well with the H3. I’m in the process of fitting both throttle and collective on the left side as I find it a pain in the butt to unscrew the throttle from the frame.. I have some 2020 and 2040 extrusions, I’ll make it work somehow. You must get your own seat though. I bought a used automotive (car) seat. I’ve tried other seats but the car seat for me works the best. Also only cost me $40 on Facebook marketplace. 1
