I am trying to boresights the mavs while on the ground

i am following everything but when i got to my TGP and i click on SnowPlow mode, the TPG looks straight ahead. But if i unclick SnowPlow mode, the TGP automatically looks somewhere totally different

this is different to what's shown in this video where SnowPlow mode is clicked and then unclicked and the TGP remains in the same place

how do you ensure the TGP stays in the same place?

The method i personally use to boresight mavs when on the ground is to just enter SP mode and then immediately enter either a point or area track to enable slewing of the TGP in front of me.

But when in SP mode, u can't control the TGP?

You cant slew in SP mode, however by using TMS UP or TMS RIGHT, you can enter point/area track which will allow you to slew.

to properly boresight does the target need to be at least 1 mile away ? or does something that's closer say 500ft work ?

DO NOT boresight the maverick at 500ft. You will only cause yourself more pain. Check out my tutorial which goes into more depth about the Maverick and the various ways to boresight and employ the missile.

There are numerous threads already about this topic: You boresight TGP / Mavericks the same like you converge your guns if wing mounted.

If you boresight them at 500ft they will match your TGP at 500ft. You boresight them at 10nm, they will match your TGP at 10nm, but not at 5nm and even worse at 1nm. Telling from my limited experience always boresight them at >7nm as usually you pick up a target at that range with a good chance of instantly finding the target in a margin to 5nm and 10nm. Forget about boresighting on ground or in flight on your wingman! Boresighting isn't that important and you can do it on your first attack run if needed. Depends on the situation and type, too. IR on a cold night is ideal, but not in the desert in plain sunlight, then TV guided are 1st choice.
