Clawhammer Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Hello all, i know SSD for the game itself is a must, but whats about the dedicated server? I dont mind longer Server loading times, i just fear strange lags cause of the slower drive. Thanks for the feedback!
Actium Posted February 28 Posted February 28 TL;DR: Considering current NVMe SSD prices, everyone recommends against HDD use. 2
scommander2 Posted February 28 Posted February 28 Hi @Actium, thanks for the posting. I am wondering that the server loads a mission first time (or, reload when restarting a new game?), and that is where the loading may take time if the mission is stored on HDD. Once the mission is started, can I assume the entire mission is loaded into the server and no longer require accessing HDD? Thanks. Clawhammer Posted February 28 Author Posted February 28 (edited) there is still some access on the drive after the map got loaded: Maybe i upgrade my gaming pc ssd and add the spare 1tb ssd to this system later. I hope its enough in the meantime for me and my 3-4 buddies playing the game. Edited February 28 by Clawhammer 1
Actium Posted February 28 Posted February 28 (edited) @Clawhammer Great use of the resource monitor 1 hour ago, scommander2 said: Once the mission is started, can I assume the entire mission is loaded into the server and no longer require accessing HDD? The .miz mission file is presumably fully loaded into memory. I'd be more worried about object models that will only be loaded once new units spawn, terrain sections that will be loaded when units enter the area (like Clawhammer just showed), etc. Opting for an NVMe SSD will give you the peace of mind that you're using the best tool for the job at hand. 1 hour ago, Clawhammer said: I hope its enough in the meantime for me and my 3-4 buddies playing the game. I've written a small script for server performance monitoring, which will warn you via global chat if the server performance deteriorates. That will at least warn you if the server performance is becoming problematic. Edited February 28 by Actium 3

I see... Thanks. So, as long as DCS stays on SSD is fine. .miz can be anywhere... 2 Spoiler Dell XPS 9730, i9-13900H, DDR5 64GB, Discrete GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080, 1+2TB M.2 SSD | Thrustmaster Warthog HOTAS + TPR | TKIR5/TrackClipPro | Total Controls Multi-Function Button Box | Win 11 Pro
Clawhammer Posted March 15 Author Posted March 15 so after some testing around, putting the entire dedicated server on a hdd made zero difference for my tiny server. 1
