Mihail_Lazarev Posted March 1 Posted March 1 I liked the DCS, but I immediately realized that I needed VR. I have a laptop with RTX 4090. In terms of power, it is about the same as 3080 desktop. How do you think if this graphic card will handle virtual reality glasses, ideally 4K for each eye?
rcjonessnp175 Posted March 1 Posted March 1 my 4080 scar 18 handles quest 3 and virtual desktop just fine, but its a marathon to find good settings to settle on. I7 4770k @ 4.6, sli 980 evga oc edition, ssdx2, Sony 55 inch edid hack nvidia 3dvision. Volair sim pit, DK2 Oculus Rift.
Porkbrain Posted March 2 Posted March 2 I have Lenovo i7 Pro laptops with 4090 16 GB GPUs & 32 GB Ram both with Quest Pro headsets which run DCS fine at high (but not max) settings.
Aapje Posted March 2 Posted March 2 The mobile 4090 is actually a 4080 with a lower TDP, so it actually performs more like a desktop 4070 Super or 3080. So you can look at people's experiences with those GPUs. 1

I have the same laptop specifications, but mine is a Gigabyte Aorus 17X AZF. As for VR glasses, if I buy them, I am aiming for Pimax Crystal Light because they have excellent reviews from flight simulator enthusiasts. These VR glasses give 8k for both eyes, so I wonder if my laptop can handle 8k In DCS. Can you tell me, please, how many FPS do you have with your Quest Pro? If I'm correct, your VR glasses give around 4K for both eyes.

Two times 4K is 6K, not 8K. It is easy to be confused, because if you take a single screen and increase the vertical and horizontal resolution by two times, you'd think that the resolution doubles, but since the screen area increases by a multiplication of the vertical and horizontal resolution, it actually increases by 2 to the power of 2, which is 4 times the increase. And the fact that they use 4K and 8K as names doesn't help, because that makes it seem like a doubling, when 8K is actually 4 times as many pixels as 4K. And the answer is no. Not even a desktop 5090 can run these headsets with maxed out settings. So you are going to have to run it with lowered settings, for example, by using DLSS 4, foveated rendering, lowered graphics settings, etc. Ultimately, no one can tell you if you consider the end result to be acceptable. There are people who have been happy with much weaker hardware, and people who are not happy with much stronger hardware. 1

This works fine with clear cockpit instruments and high terrain levels/shadows etc. On a 'quiet' map it will range up to 72fps, if there are lots of units/aircraft then it will be solid at 36fps which suits me fine, I haven't made any other headset/toolkit changes.

Could you please tell me which VR glasses would be the best choice for my case? Will glasses with higher resolution give any advantages, for example, Pimax Crystal Light with 4k for an eye, or will they just cause a drop in fps due to the resolution being too high?
Aapje Posted March 2 Posted March 2 Testing with these headsets in a competing flight sim shows that the Quest 3 has less overhead, so with weaker hardware, you get a better result with that headset. But then the Pimax Crystal Light pulls ahead with a better GPU+CPU. The 4090 Mobile should be strong enough to give the advantage to the Pimax Crystal Light.
