Aegean Map, and why it makes sense…..
A Strategic, Mythic & Geopolitical Battleground
w here NATO forces clash constantly.

Since this are the Balkans and if anything we can all be selectively as well as collectively stupid and hotheaded, speaking as one, I would like to ask all involved members from these countries to be positive.

Executive Summary

What is the Aegean map and why does it make sense for DCS?

Featured are: Hellas. Turkey. Bulgaria. North Macedonia. Albania. A tip of Italy.

  • A map with the approximate size as depicted would involve only NATO members but is still a hot zone ideal for DCS with countless opportunities for military scenarios.
    It has everything we need in excess.
    A big archipelago dividing two major countries with the 2nd and 3rd biggest armies in NATO and airforces using most assets available to the Player base. The archipelago is scattered with thousands of islands of harsh terrain giving plenty of masking opportunities. A separation of both land and sea borders with one land border being a river crossing where over 8.000 vehicles from tanks to IFV’s will fight under heavy artillery cover.

    6. Tactical Depth

    • Naval ops in narrow passages

    • Island airbases and SAM coverage

    • Carrier ops near Crete or Rhodes

    • S300, S400, HAWK, Patriot, and Turkish Hisar air defenses

7. Available Assets

  • Use of existing DCS modules: F-16. F-4. M2K. F35. F1. F5. Mi24. Su25. Mig29 Mig21. Mig15. UH1. Apache. Mi8. Kiowa. No need for new aircraft to enjoy the map

8. Possible Campaign Ideas

  • "Phantom Over the Aegean" (Cold War)

  • "Interception Protocol" (Modern border patrol escalating)

  • "Operation Poseidon's Edge" (Hypothetical RED vs BLUE invasion)

  • Blue Flag/Iniochos training campaign

9. Benefits to DCS Ecosystem

  • New visual aesthetics (whitewashed towns, rocky islands. A non Red clash between Blue on Blue Forces.)

  • Unique missions blending air/naval/terrain ops

  • Huge interest from the Greek, Turkish, and broader NATO DCS community

 

 

🇬🇷 Greece (Hellenic Air Force - HAF)

  1. Souda Air Base (LGSA) – Crete

    • Key NATO air base, often used by US and allied forces.

    • Hosts F-16s, MQ-9s, and refueling ops.

  2. Andravida Air Base (LGRD) – Western Peloponnese

    • Home of the HAF F-4E Phantoms, recently transitioning to Rafale training and exercises.

  3. Araxos Air Base (LGRX) – Western Greece

    • Former nuclear-capable base, operates F-16s.

  4. Tanagra Air Base (LGTG) – Central Greece

    • Now hosting Greece’s Rafale fleet.

    • Strategic due to its proximity to Athens.

  5. Larissa Air Base (LGLR) – Thessaly

    • Major transport and recon base, houses MQ-9s, C-130s, sometimes F-16s.

  6. Nea Anchialos Air Base (LGBL) – near Volos

    • Base for F-16s.

  7. Elefsis Air Base (LGEL) – near Athens

    • Main transport hub of the HAF.

  8. Kastelli Air Base (LGTL) – Crete (under construction for F-35s)

    • Will replace Heraklion in the near future.

🇹🇷 Turkey (Turkish Air Force - TuAF)

  1. Balıkesir Air Base (LTBF)

    • North of the Aegean, formerly nuclear-capable.

  2. Bandırma Air Base (LTBG)

    • Used for F-16 operations, logistics support.

  3. Çiğli Air Base (LTBL) – Near İzmir

    • Training and transport, could be activated for operations.

  4. Akhisar Air Base (LTBT)

    • Near the western Turkish coast, supports rotary-wing aircraft.

  5. Dalaman Airport (LTBS)

    • Civilian/military mixed-use, could be used as a forward operating base.

🇮🇹 Italy (Aeronautica Militare – Italian Air Force)

Only the Apulia region (Puglia) is in view — specifically the “heel” of Italy:

  1. Gioia del Colle Air Base (LIBV)

    • Hosts Eurofighter Typhoons.

    • Often used in NATO southern flank operations.

  2. Amendola Air Base (LIBA)

    • Hosts Italian F-35A and MQ-9 drones.

    • Crucial for ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance) missions.

  3. Galatina Air Base (LIBN) – Near Lecce

    • Training base for M-346s but can host other assets during crises.

🇧🇬 Bulgaria

  1. Graf Ignatievo Air Base

    • Near Plovdiv.

    • Main fighter base.

    • Hosts MiG-29s (transitioning to F-16V in the near future).

    • ICAO: LBPG

  2. Bezmer Air Base

    • Near Yambol.

    • Su-25 operations, tactical support.

    • ICAO: LBIA

  3. Dolna Mitropoliya Air Base

    • Near Pleven.

    • Training base.

    • Light aircraft and cadet training.

    • ICAO: LBPL

  4. Vrazhdebna (Sofia International)

    • Shares military facilities, limited military use.

    • ICAO: LBSF

NMKNorth Macedonia

  1. Petrovec Air Base (Skopje International Airport)

    • ICAO: LWSK

    • Previously operated Mi-24 and An-2.

    • Now mainly transport and rotary support (Bell 206/212, Cougar).

🇦🇱 Albania

  1. Kucova Air Base (Kuçovë)

    • Being refurbished as NATO tactical air base.

    • Previously MiG-19/21 base.

    • ICAO: LAKV

  2. Farka Air Base

    • Rotary-wing and support.

    • Close to Tirana.

    • No IATA/ICAO – military heliport.

  3. Rinas (Tirana International Airport)

    • Dual-use.

    • ICAO: LATI

NAVAL BASES
 


🇬🇷 Greece

  1. Souda Bay (Crete) – NATO’s crown jewel in the East Med

    • Deep-water naval base, U.S. Navy & Hellenic Navy presence.

    • Refueling, maintenance, intelligence operations.

    • Runway + pier = strategic reach over MENA, Suez, Eastern Med.

  2. Salamis Naval Base (near Athens)

    • Main Hellenic Navy base.

    • Shipyard and logistics hub.

    • Historical continuity, still highly active.

  3. Amfiali (Piraeus area)

    • Auxiliary support for Salamis.

  4. Naval Base of Skaramangas (Western Attica)

    • Also shipbuilding/maintenance capacity.

  5. Aktio/Naval Air Station (Preveza, Ionian Sea)

    • Air/naval surveillance role.

🇹🇷 Turkey

  1. Aksaz Naval Base (Aegean Sea, near Marmaris)

    • One of Turkey's strongest western bases.

    • Major fleet HQ, extensive submarine activity.

  2. Gölcük Naval Base (Sea of Marmara)

    • Turkish Navy command center.

    • Key logistics + dockyard.

    • Vulnerable to earthquakes.

  3. Foça Naval Base (near İzmir)

    • Submarines and special forces (SAT/SAS).

    • Close to Greek isles = tension hotspot.

  4. Iskenderun / Mersin Ports (East Med)

    • Supports Turkish Navy in the Levant.

  5. Sinop (Black Sea, older Soviet-watching base)

🇮🇹 Italy

  1. Taranto Naval Base (Southern Italy)

    • Italy’s main naval HQ.

    • Submarines, carriers, support ships.


 

🇦🇱 Albania

  1. Pasha Liman Naval Base (Vlorë)

    • Former Soviet/Warsaw Pact base.

    • Now under modernization with NATO support.

  2. Durres Port

    • Civilian/military dual use.

    • Has NATO logistical interest.

I hope ED or one of its associated corps will take the opportunity and give us this gem.

@ineth Better to have posted in the map wishlist section. And you're not the first to propose this. As the Balkan map is in development, maybe you can convince OnReTech to extend it south-east. 😉
