Cyking Posted June 19 Posted June 19 (edited) Northern Defenders – Phantoms Rising | Introduction & FAQ Welcome to the Introduction & FAQ for my new DCS World campaign featuring the iconic F-4E Phantom II. This post provides an overview of what to expect, how the campaign is designed, and answers to frequently asked questions. Campaign Trailer: First Look Video: What is "Northern Defenders – Phantoms Rising"? It’s a story-driven single-player campaign set in a fictional Cold War gone hot scenario in 1985. After suffering heavy losses in the first month of the war, NATO forces are regrouping in Scandinavia. You play as a German Luftwaffe pilot tasked with holding the line and pushing back the Soviet advance into Finland, Sweden, and Norway. What kind of missions can I expect? The campaign offers a wide range of mission types with changing objectives to keep gameplay diverse. Expect Cold War–era mission profiles including: Combat Air Patrol (CAP) Close Air Support (CAS) Armed Reconnaissance Strike Missions Escort Flights Each mission is handcrafted and offers unique challenges. How realistic is the campaign? While the campaign includes realistic elements—such as radio procedures for takeoff, landing, and AI coordination—it is not a strict simulation of historical Luftwaffe operations. To support gameplay variety, you will fly a range of missions, including some that wouldn’t normally fall under a fighter-bomber pilot’s role, like CAP. The goal is to combine immersive atmosphere with engaging and flexible mission design. Is the campaign voice-acted? Yes. The campaign features fully voiced radio traffic and custom voice acting to bring each mission to life and enhance immersion. How many missions are included? The campaign includes 13 handcrafted missions, each with illustrated and narrated briefings, custom briefings pages, and cutscenes that support the story arc. Is this a historical campaign? No. It is set in an alternate 1985 timeline and presents a fictionalized conflict based on real-world Cold War dynamics. While fictional, it strives to maintain a sense of authenticity in tactics, mission flow, and political tone. Is the campaign beginner-friendly? Some familiarity with the F-4E Phantom II is recommended. That said, the campaign is designed to be accessible, with clear briefings, kneeboards, and in-mission guidance. Most missions follow a classic structure: receive your tasking, proceed to the area of operations, and return safely. However, difficulty comes from operational challenges such as: Locating targets using mission clues (e.g. waypoint marks) Engaging superior enemy aircraft while limited to AIM-9 missiles, as was standard for German F-4s during this period Will the campaign receive updates or bugfixes after release? Yes. While each mission has been tested thoroughly, I’m working with a small test group, so minor issues may still appear. Player feedback is very welcome and updates will be provided as needed. Can I fly this campaign in co-op? At this point, the campaign is designed for single-player only. While co-op was considered in the early planning phase, DCS’s current limitations with campaign logic, cockpit triggers, and AI comms made it difficult to implement reliably. Standalone co-op versions of selected missions may be released in the future. Is there custom music or audio? Yes. The campaign includes original music tracks, ambient sound design, and a fictional 1985-style radio channel with news and music that plays during long flights and holding patterns. Do I need to perform air-to-air refueling to complete a mission? In nearly all missions, a tanker is available as an optional support. While some missions might encourage the use of air-to-air refueling, [u]every mission can be completed without it, as long as you manage your fuel carefully. How long does a mission usually take? Mission length varies between approximately 40 to 90. For those who don’t feel like flying all the way home, you can exit the mission after completing your main task—though this will result in a lower mission score. You’ll also miss out on some sarcastic post-mission chatter and a stylish 80s radio channel on the way back. What if I keep getting shot down? It might be time to rethink your tactics. In most missions, Jester will offer useful hints to help you complete your objective. Additionally, there's a “Cheat Menu” available through the radio menu: You can enable immortal mode) or activate helper smoke markers to highlight ground targets in certain missions. Have more questions? Feel free to post them in this thread. I’ll do my best to keep this FAQ updated. A few final words This is my second campaign release—and my first one featuring a fixed-wing aircraft. It took a lot of time, learning, and late nights to bring this project to life, and I’m proud to finally share it with you. I sincerely hope you enjoy flying Northern Defenders – Phantoms Rising. It’s part of a larger alternate Cold War narrative I’d love to expand further—possibly with other modules from the same era, both in Scandinavia and the new cold war germany map. Telling the story of one big conflict from many different pilot perspectives. Thank you for taking the time to check it out. I’m very much looking forward to your feedback—hopefully merciful, but always appreciated. – Cyking Edited July 17 by Cyking added Behind the Scenes Video 7 DISCORD - YOUTUBE - INSTAGRAM
