Following the procedure from the manual, I cannot acquire a lock using the Lock On/NWS button.

  • Master Arm on
  • Radar in Illuim mode
  • RAD Mode
  • Inboard Missiles selected
  • Span adjusted to target size
  • Bandit strobes visible (single 3-dot line)
  • Position Target acquisition box over strobe
  • Press Lock On/NSW

Nothing happens. I can only get locks using IR missiles with Optical Electronic sight.

Radar will not lock.

Lock on in RAD mode can take anywhere from 2 to 7 seconds of holding down the button.

Also moving the cursor box and dynamically moving the aircraft can cause difficulty in locking. Locking also in auto has limitation, and will usually have a harder time picking up and Locking targets

Locking with the MiG-29 is probably harder than in any 4rth gen aircraft. Things that will help is.

1: making sure you you keep the aircraft relatively stable when Locking.

2. Use head on, or pursuit modes when the occasion calls for it, over auto mode. Auto mode is a compromise trying to give you the best of both worlds, but it also means you have a harder time properly detecting the target, and so when you go to lock on the area it's scanning to lock on is not as precise as if you were in the other mode.

The MiG-29s radar is useful. But mostly in the scope that you have time to set up your attack. If your requiring to find a lock quickly, then you are going to struggle more then with other 4rth gen aircraft.
