While training I like to use unlimited weapons but I find that although I have "ticked" the box for unlimited ammo and asked for the option to be used in all flights, I still run out of any weapon I use.

I thought it was happening post patch but I sacrificed one of my deactivations to reinstall the original version 1.0 and found the unlimited ammo option isn't working in that version either.

Am I alone in this or have others found the same, and is it computer related (OS) or a bug?

You do not need to use a deactivation to reinstall. Only hardware changes or operating system reinstalls will prompt a requirement for a de-activation.

Check the maps you are doing this on. The mission editor allows the map maker to force settings, like force ammo to be limited. Also, you have verified that you are ticking the box for the right mode? Note that changes to "Game" mode will have no effect at all when in "Real" mode.

was the mission you flew have unlimited ticked off in the mission options? It overrides the general menu game options.

I noticed the ammo running out first in the training mission that shows the use of the various weapons, even with the unlimited box ticked.

I gather by the replies that I am alone in having this anomaly and will try again to see what I am doing wrong, unless the training mission in question has a built in ammo limit, which I think would be a little unhelful!

You can check if it does through opening the mission in the mission editor. See the manual for where to locate those settings within the mission file.

Refer to the GUI manual, page 91.

If the mission in question is the Shooting Range mission, then yes, it appears to be enforced. You can change this easily though. Just either remove the left "enforce" tickbox from unlimited ammo (removing the enforcing completely) or tick the right "value" box to instead force that setting to on.

So, it's not an anomaly at all. It's how the mission is made, and if you do not like it you can change it in under a minute. Happy flying. :)

EDIT:

Again, though, do remember in future that you do not have to use a deactivation if you are simply reinstalling the game. See the quickstart guide for information. The system works through taking a hardware profile upon activation, and if you later remove the simulator and then install it again, the activation software will connect to the StarForce servers and compare the current hardware profile with the one logged on the server and if they are identical or near-identical (some smaller changes are allowed) it will not use a new activation.

I checked and the mission I referred to is not the "shooting gallery" one, but the one in the "training" section about weapon usage, which does not seem to have a miz file, only trk, and so can not be edited as the shooting gallery one can be.

Anyway I have learnt a bit about the sim which is useful!

Well, if you want to practice you could just select any random mission in the mission editor, save it under a new name (to preserve the original), and then change that one to your preferences. You'll learn a good bunch about the mission editor in the process, even though the very basic things you'd have to do wouldn't be a big thing to learn (20 minutes with the manual to hand, tops).

What I did when learning to fly was actually to create blank missions in the mission editor, and then add just the specific things that I judged I needed to practice. I never used unlimited ammo though - since landing is the most important skill there is in aviation, any repetition there is only good. ;)

Thanks again!

Yes, I agree about the need to learn how to land and having to do that to re-supply is a good way to discipline yourself into practising landing.

I have found the comms key "\" is not recognised when pressed on my keyboard when in the sim so I have had to re-assign it to get the comms menu to appear and hence allow re-supply.

First thing to do is ensure that you are at a base that has the facilities you need. Airports have them by default, but FARPs require that the correct vehicles (fuel truck etcetera) are placed within a specific radius of the FARP.

That done, you need one of two things to be true:

1 - You are cold and dark, with the door open. You can then communicate with the ground crew.

2 - Radio knob (lower left panel) set to "ground crew" - that is, the rightmost position of it.

You then open the radio menu, select F10 for ground crew, and either select refuel or re-arm. Both will give you options, the former for amount of fuel and the latter for type of armament. They'll give you options of various types, but typically the "anti-tank" category is the one you'll want. I don't recall the F-key combinations offhand though.

Then if you takeoff without turning the radio knob back, you'll hear your ground crew bitching at you. See, they connect their headsets by wire to your chopper, and you just took off with them still attached. :D

But which version of the simulator do you have? It should all be in english if you have the english version, except for the cockpit if you have set it to russian. That can be changed in the options menu, though.

As for the place in the manual, refer to section 14-18 (page 504). That's where ground crew is covered. There's also stuff before and after that relates to handling ATC, wingmen etcetera, but take one thing at a time. The biggest obstacle to learning is to chew off to much at the same time. ;)

Thanks again for being so helpful, I really do appreciate it as the manual is so daunting, although I realise the importance of reading it and trying to understand it.

This sim is not to be taken lightly and I want to do it justice and devote the time to it that it deserves.

Your help has made things clearer in areas that were bothering me.

Much appreciated!

My pleasure.

And once you are airborne and feel like you are in control, don't be afraid to go to a multiplayer server if you need help. Most servers have friendly people that can help you out. :)
