your Windows 7 gaming experience

Hearing from a friend that simulators (FSX, BS, F4, Lockon) run like at least about 10 fps minimum faster in his win7 setup compared to XP i thought to check out how it is for the other users out there. Thanks.

I'd have to call BS on that claim but I would not hesitate to suggest that you upgrade to W7 if you have the appropriate hardware.

 

I was dual booting 7 and XP but have gone entiurely over to 7.

 

FSX (have it, runs well enough for GA addons only. FSX is really just a shit pile of programming code from FS2000 that is dolled up to look better but runs worse... sadly, my favorite game, too)

BS (have it, runs well, this one seems significantly improved over XP)

F4 (have it, runs well, AA problems with Nvidia hardware)

LOMAC (have it, runs well, may run even better with upcoming FC 2.0)

I wouldn't say that it is neessarily simulators specifically that run better on W7 than XP - rather, it is demanding singlethreaded applications that generally see the biggest improvement, this due to Vista and W7 having muh better multicore handling (remember that XP was designed at a time where there was no such thing as "multicore" and only server applications used multi-processor setups - and they would buy Windows 2000 Server, not XP, or *NIX, Linux, BSD or Solaris or whatever). There might be added benefits in that they support DirectX10 routines - I've seen people mention that the Dx10 libraries are able to split routines in some cases even if the general application isn't written for that - but I am unsure of it.

 

Generally speaking though, as far as I know all of the listed simulators are indeed singlethreaded (though I'm slightly unsure about FSX) and therefore would benefit from Vista or W7 compared to XP.
