I was wondering what the difference on the CAR-15 and the M-4 is.

I know the CAR-15 is a carbine version of the M-16, but isn't the M-4 the same?

Seems M-4 is a specific version of the CAR-15...

This pretty much answers it:

In 1984, the United States government asked Colt to develop a carbine with maximum commonality with the issue M16A2. Colt named the carbine as the XM4. The project would eventually culminate in the official adoption of the M4 carbine in 1994.

Embarrassing to say that I don't know the difference either and here I am firing one during a visit to Colorado Springs a couple of years ago. But I'm not 100% what it is - is it a CAR-15? IguanaKing is well known on these boards and the weapon is his brothers. Wikipedia says that the civilian semi-auto versions were marketed as CAR-15 so I guess that's what it is, but don't quote me on that.

I'd never fired anything other than a shotgun before, but this is very easy to shoot. I was hitting what I aimed at very easily with just the iron sights.

As far as i get it, CAR-15 is the name for all the carbine versions of the AR-15 platform (M-16). M-4 is a specific CAR-15 model, as there are many differences, like barrel length etc. The M-4 is essential a carbine of the M-16A2 afaik
