Well, I'm going to be building a new computer next week and I have LOMAC 1.1 installed on my old computer. I'm totally selling off all the parts on my old computer except for the case, HD and the DVD writer, everything else is gone. I must say the original activation went flawlessly. What's going to happen though when I reinstall on my new PC? I assume it will use another one of my activations?? Also, if I ever decide to reformat my new computer and reinstall will I have to use another activation or are the activations only if you make major changes to your computer like I am now. The original activation went very well without any problems.

First: new computer = new hardware = new activation.

Now for the reformat.

You don't have to use another activation.

Unfortunately the final key, that you get after the activation process, is stored in the registry. This key is based on your hardware config.

So if you want to format your system, you have to do a backup of this registry entry, which is described here:

http://forum.lockon.ru/showthread.php?t=7569 (I suggest making this one a sticky).

Otherwise it's lost and you have to use another activation.

From what I've seen, the original plan was that an activation would be needed only if 40% of your equipment changed. But there were people who had activations(especially if set to automatic but not manual) for merely re-installing.

ED has said that if you've reached your 5 activations, just send them an e-mail with codes for more activations. A few further reports in the last day have some people receiving an extra 10 activations without asking

Next week when ED has the Verisign payment system up and running, we Might hear more about activations.

so, the answer is likely but don't quote me on it :icon_hang

EDIT:

Schimmel gives a good tip on backing up registry key.
