When creating a MPx8 map, do i have to use a start trigger to activate all unit groups?

For "client" aircraft? No. When a player joins they automatically activate the aircraft they have selected.

 

For everything else, the units you have placed will spawn just the same as single player. Only when you want to delay them is when you would need to activate at some point in the mission.

so when i look at dragon's "the Dam" MP mission and see the 33 start triggers - > random 70%->activating all the UKR_Zufall units.... why would he do that?

I would have to look at the mission in the editor to tell you exactly why he does that. But my guess is that all of the triggers in there at mission start that have a Random condition in it is to randomly spawn ground targets/threats.

 

By randomly spawning groups of units you have a degree of re-playability because a sam threat or the target area might not always be in the same location each time you play. There are a ton of different ways to randomly spawn groups. Each are unique and useful in their own way.
