Panning the view around aircraft

IS there a faster way to pan the view around the aircraft when looking externally? I mean pausing the game moving the view then unpausing is faster than the slow pan in game. Maybe I'm using the wrong controls.

I use the mouse to pan around in external views and it's pretty damn fast.
