636_Castle Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 Hey Aces I'm practicing BVR in the F-15C because to be quite honest, I'm HORRIBLE at it. I miss the Top Gun training section FC1 had. I learned a lot about firing, turning away, missile energy etc (even though I still get my arse whooped online). Ok so I guess I should get to the point - I'm doing head on BVR against a rotating series of aircraft (-29, -31, -27). I've always thought one of the greatest advantages of the AIM-120C, is that it includes a smokeless motor. However I can clearly see a smoke trail during my AMRAAM's burn! I'm NOT able to see a smoke trail on my adversaries LR missile - but I can see his jet's contrail. Am I mistaking here? Does the 120C not have a smokeless motor? P.S. Any tips from you guys on how to win a bvr fight would be awesome. I've only beaten this AI guy once, and every other time he still shreds off a control surface even if I do get him in return. GGTharos Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 The AIM-120C uses a reduced smoke motor, and it's actually quite hard to see both in RL and in the game compared to the smoky motors. diveplane Posted June 26, 2010 Posted June 26, 2010 (edited) good data info here on the weapon as well http://www.jolly-rogers.com/airpower/aim-120/structure.html ...........source site.. The WPU-6/B is classed as a dual thrust motor. This boost/sustain model is designed to rapidly propel the missile to maximum velocity and then ensure maximum endurance. Initially the fuel burns quickly in the boost phase but then the consumption is throttled back to achieve maximum range. The motor burns for xxxxxx seconds and accelerates the AIM-120 to a speed of approximately Mach 4. The combined burn-time and velocity give the AMRAAM a theoretical range of over 40 miles. 636_Castle Posted June 26, 2010 Author Posted June 26, 2010 Okay I see. Yeah I just practiced with some heaters, and those were way smokier. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] How To Fix Your X-52's Rudder!
revalence Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 Here, look at this. This image of the AIM-120B shows the slight trail that there AIM-120 leaves behind. Yes, there is a trail. Smokeless, in other words, usually means it's exhaust plume is very hard to find in BVR combat. In FC2, I think the trail in modelled very well, the exhaust is slightly shone but doesn't have the white sheen to it like the others (AIM-9, R-73, R-27...etc.) And don't forget, it's supposed to be smokeless to your target, not to you, mostly when you're watching the missile launch. So don't worry, we'll soon have a update/revise that will make the trail even more realistic. But again, nothing is perfect! -Andrew (Revalence)
GGTharos Posted June 29, 2010 Posted June 29, 2010 No, smokeless means smokeless. The AMRAAM uses a reduced smoke motor. [sIGPIC][/sIGPIC] Reminder: SAM = Speed Bump :D I used to play flight sims like you, but then I took a slammer to the knee - Yoda
