Question on 3rd Eagle mission *Spoilers*

With the 3rd Eagle mission i did what Venn said and that is to lock up a target and tell your wingman to engage instead of saying engage bandits, and it worked. But the question i have is there was a 4 ship of Flankers and Fulcrums and all we took down were the Fulcrums what happened to the Flankers then?
